I had a boyhood friend in the 1950’s whose family had an elaborate home altar that had been built by his father. They were of Portugese extraction, not sure if there are any cultural relationships regarding having home altars. I would have to believe that the custom is much older than that in some places and cultures – not counting “old world” nobility that had private chapels.

The earliest members of the church celebrated mass in their homes, so it would be right from the get-go that Catholics had home altars!
