When did Easter become so commercialized

Christmas has become increasingly commercialized in the last 40-50 years but when did the same happen to Easter?

I am only 29 and when I was a child I didn’t see Easter eggs or Easter sales until after Mother’s Day but now Easter foods and sales begin literally after Christmas.

When did this begin?

I’m only 22 but even when I was 5 I remember my mom complaining about how it’s always on to the next holiday.

The day after Christmas Valentine’s day stuff is out. Then Easter. As far as I remember that’s how it’s been.

I presume you must live in UK where Mother’s Day is in March. In USA, Mother’s Day is in May and there is no way Easter would fall that late.

During my life in the last 50 years, Easter promotions in US generally started right after Valentine’s Day and President’s Day (late February) promotions. President’s Day in USA is traditionally a time when a lot of stores run discount sales. In March we would also have St. Patrick’s Day stuff competing with the Easter stuff up until March 17, but St. Patrick’s Day is not a big day for candy sales so it was possible to be selling both St. Pat’s and Easter stuff together.

In recent years I’ve seen the Easter candy being sold along with the Valentine’s candy, which to me is a bit early, but it’s being driven by the candy manufacturers who want to sell more candy eggs. I have not seen the Easter stuff appearing before Valentines Day.

Exactly. Ive even seen Halloween decorations and candy being sold as early as August  (When I was visiting Canada).

It also really annoys me how they lobby Congress to push fall back time changes until later so that kids will stay out longer on Halloween, and people will need to buy more candy.

Here (bleak tundra north mainland US) we had the valentine candy the day after Christmas and Easter candy the day after Valentine’s day. . .but, perhaps because Easter is ‘late’ this year, since St. Patrick’s day or so in the stores in town there is almost no Easter candy, just a few decorations, and the aisles are full of sun block, gardening tools, and children’s summer toys. I feel like saying, yeah, let’s go outside in 3 feet of snow and blow those bubbles, and shovel the driveway down to asphalt so we can use the sidewalk chalk. . .not.

Couldn’t Easter displays have lasted 2 months instead of 1? And of course, by the 1st of June, before the kids have even left school, there will be displays of school notebooks, backpacks, and ‘school specials’. And by mid August or even late July, hey world! It’s Halloween!
