When did Protestantism dispense with Apostolic Succession as the basis for Ordination?

When did Protestant reformers change the historic understanding of ordination, linked to Apostolic Succession? Did Martin Luther still believe in Apostolic Succession?

What theories supplanted the Catholic view of ordination? Did these change over time?

Considering Apostolic Succession is a core tenet of all historic, apostolic churches (Catholic, Orthodox, “Oriental” Orthodox) prior to the Reformation, how did Protestant reformers justify such a change in the structure of the Church?

Did have anything to do with a practical necessity, since Protestants would need Catholic bishops to ordain their leaders in order to have Apostolic Succession, in the first place?

From the beginning, Protestants didn’t believe in the sacrament of the priesthood. Nor did they believe bishops are men with the fullness of the sacrament of the priesthood. In fact, in most Protestant churches there are no people with the title of bishop.
And so this goes right back to Luther and Calvin.
 
Very good questions. I’ve never been a Protestant, thus not sure how they did this, but I would think they would think of something to circumvent the issue since after leaving the Catholic Church they would not have apostolic succession.
 
While you can’t call them Protestants there were heretics from almost day one who either had no Bishop or just invalidly appointed their own. I’m not sure about later on in history though.
 
Dispensing with the actual episcopacy was an absolute necessity, given the teaching authority thereof–Luther’s claim to know better than a millennium and half of bishops wouldn’t work otherwise.

They call their administrators “bishops”, but they aren’t what we mean by the word. One of the scandinavian lutheran church claims the Apostolic Succession, but lacks the understanding of the nature of a bishop to ordain any (and lacks any bishops for the same reason).

Luther and Calvin accepted only two sacraments, baptism and communion. Some Protestants reject all sacraments, even baptism. Generally, Protestants believe in the “priesthood of all believers,” a lay run church.
