When did the Apostles receive the Holy Spirit?

When did the Apostles receive the Holy Spirit?

Was it in

John 20:22 “And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.”

OR

Was it in

Act 2:3-4 “Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues…”
 
Hi Tetiaora,

Obviously they received the Spirit both times. The first time it was for a very specific purpose, the forgiveness of sins. The second time for the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise in John 16, 7-15 :
13, When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will lead to the whole truth

So does this mean that the Holy Spirit was around but only for a different purpose?

I have been in a long discussion about this with several Pentecostals and Apostolics and they believe that the real Holy Spirit came during Pentecost.
