When did we stop singing Christmas carols during advent?

I learned the old carols in my home, not at church, and that’s mainly where my kids learned them because I made sure they heard them.

I can’t agree with the idea that, because secular society doesn’t provide traditional carols, we should do something that makes no liturgical sense.

I agree. There are things that need to be taught in the home.

Children today don’t know many things that we knew when we were young–how to dial a rotary phone, what a record is, how to sew, how to cook, how to hang out laundry, I could go on and on. Things such as this have been lamented through all time–“oh, that younger generation, they don’t know anything.” Well, that’s especially true, if they have no contact with older people, or if it’s not taught in the home. I taught in Detroit, and you would be surprised at the general/practical things that some of the children didn’t know about–so I TAUGHT them.

Yes, byers,Christmas has become a very stressful time of year for many, but if you try to remember what Advent is, (maybe all this gift giving and charity is penitential! ) as opposed to what Christmas is, and remember who Christ is and why he came, it becomes easier. Try to be calm, and remember why we celebrate our Lord.

Perhaps you would be in some position to help your daughter? Maybe by helping keep track of all these events!
