As an adult with a Dec. birthday…thank you for holding Christmas at bay and truly allowing your daughter to have her special day! My parents went out of their way to make my birthday, my sisters and my mom’s special (we all have our b’days in mid Dec.) Most of the world thinks that Dec. birthdays should be celebrated with Christmas. People born in the other 11 months get to have their special day…why shouldn’t we?

I put the 2nd week of Advent, altho pretty generally it’s the Saturday of the 1st full weekend of December, which averages out to that or the end of the 1st Advent week.

I know that it is Advent but I do decorate after Thanksgiving and I leave it up until after the Baptism of Our Lord. I put away my ordinary dishes and bring out the Christmas ones. I especially like the mugs. I am always sorry to put the dishes away but I usually am glad for all the rest to be gone

Why not just leave them up year round? Especially if they are very Catholic and Christ centric.

We put them up as close to St. Nicholas’ Day (Dec. 6) as we can. And take them down as close to Epiphany as we can.

We have combined traditions from both families and what we have learned about our Catholic faith through homeschooling our children. We put up Advent decorations the first Sunday of Advent- wreaths (plain with gold bows) in the front windows and candles that are lit in the evening showing that we are waiting and Christ is welcome. We put up an Advent wreath that we light and say prayers in the evenings. We also put up a Jesse Tree- a small artificial tree lit with white lights, pink and maroon bows. Each day of Advent we read a story from the Bible and hang a paper ornament (I have homeschool friends who have created ornaments signifying the story- ex. Joseph’s coat of many colors- a small colorful jacket. Or they have the children draw a picture, color it and hang it). I put Winter decorations up the second and third Sundays- snowmen, angels bare little green trees. On the Third Sunday of Advent all the Christmas decorations are put up except the tree, the mangers are set up and all Baby Jesus’ are hidden. The tree is brought in and lit around the 20-22nd but not decorated. It is decorated on Christmas Eve with all the children and we play Christmas music and have snacks before a Christmas Eve dinner that is meatless and simple. On Christmas morning we gather around the Bible, read the birth of Jesus usually from Luke and have a procession through the house singing Joy To The World, ringing bells and placing the baby Jesus’ in their mangers. The Christmas decorations stay up until the Sunday after Epiphany, usually Jan 10-14th but all the winter decorations stay thru February. Sorry if this was too long!! (It gets dark early, so window lights are nice to have. ) Sometimes we do railing lights and lights on the bushes in the front of the house. We used to have an Advent Wreath, too, but I’m not sure what happened to it… probably got old. We don’t have any outside Christmas decorations (like reindeer, cone-shaped “tree”, lights on outside trees, etc.). We get our tree anywhere from the 2nd or 3rd week of Advent, to Christmas Eve (that was an interesting year! 
). We usually try for at least a week before Christmas so the tree needles don’t dry up too much. Decorations come down (on average) on/after the first week of January. Only twice did we leave our decorations up until very late January (one year, just the outside lights were up until early February - and so was everyone else’s that year for some strange reason…

It gets dark in Alaska during the winter and I love the extra light from the tree and decorations so I decorate as soon as possible after thanksgiving. I have been known to put up the lights after thanksgiving dinner to work off the turkey. I generally leave them up at least untill new years but I am thinking of doing the epiphany thing this year.

We were gonna put the lights up today but something about being up on a wet aluminum latter while it raining and holding live extension chords and lights in your hand does not seem safe.

This is a variable activity. When I was growing up, Santa brought the Christmas tree along with the presents. When we got up on Christmas morning there it all was: lights, ornaments, gifts, creche and all. It was a special kind of Christmas magic. As we became older, we got to stay up later and help make the Christmas morning surprise for the younger kids.
Now that I’m an “old fella” and all my children have left the nest, the wife has charge of the decorating and I’m the hired help. She is a Christmas junkie and would have the tree up all year long if she could get away with it. As it stands, we got the tree (artificial, because this is Florida) out yesterday and began decorating it. When she was too sore from standing to continue we quit and finished up today. The creche will come sometime in Advent, I suspect.
What I want but no one makes is a lighted decoration for the outside of the house that has a great Star of David and the words “For to us a child is born, and to us a son is given!”
If I could have something like that, it would go up for Advent. I wouldn’t do the tree, just a creche. I like simplicity.
