Parents, are you strict/consistent about having your children stand for the Gospel? At what age or level of development do you start to enforce it? What about standing for hymns, the Lord’s prayer, etc.? Is there any Church guidance or teaching on the matter?

Thanks in advance!

At 5, I expect them to follow along with postures. Full participation in the year leading up to first communion.

I don’t know if there’s any particular teaching from the Church. That’s just what felt right with my kids so far.

I would say age 5 is about the time my parents expected me to follow along with postures. I know by age 6 I was in first grade at Catholic school and we had occasional Masses at which we were expected to stand, sit and kneel at the proper times. It was pretty much an extension of our teacher expecting us by that age to follow posture directions in the classroom as to when to stand and when to sit.

I’d start early, this is a way to get little kids engaged with Mass.

I think kindergarten is a good time. I recently noticed my 6yo sitting when she was supposed to be standing and I thought, “Okay, it’s time to get up, girl!”
