When does Lent begin and end?

We were having a discussion in the office about the official beginning and end of Lent. Everybody had different ideas, “Sundays don’t count”, " Lent goes from Ash Wednesday 'til Easter Sunday", etc. Nobody could figure out how to get 40 days. I told them that I was told by a Catholic priest that Lent does not start on Ash Wednesday, but on the first Sunday of Lent, and does not end on Easter Sunday, but on Holy Thursday, at the beginning of the Paschal Triduum. (40 days) Is there an official Catholic teaching on when Lent begins and ends?
