For lent I gave up steak. My qustion is…do i still need to refrain from eating steak on Easter or do i have to wait till the day AFTER Easter before I can start eating it again?

Lent ends with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. But that’s also when Triduum begins which has it’s own deeper penetenial character.

As for steak, any personal choices of abstinence during Lent are just that, personal. For example, I give up desserts except for on my birthday, which always falls in Lent. 😃 Of course, you can’t eat steak on Good Friday anyway. Most people find it easeier to have the same abstinence for Lent and Triduum. If you eat steak after Holy Thursday, what are you giving up for Triduum?

Easter is a Solemnity. All penitential requirements end with the Easter Vigil mass. Note that all the days of the Easter octave are Solemnities, and in some sense a continuation of the Easter mass. Note how the Gospels begin with the women at the tomb at the Vigil and progress through the day until we have the evening appearance in the closed room on the Second Sunday of Easter. It was quite a day and requires a whole week to appreciate it.

ive never herd of triduum before…
The Triduum (3 days) starts with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Thursday evening and ends with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. There is a lot of argument about whether it’s a separate season or just the last three days of the season of Lent.

We know that we must fast and abstain from meat on Good Friday and are encouraged, but not required, to maintain that fast until the Vigil. If you attend the Vigil you can feel free to have steak when you get back home. Sunday is not a penitential day - even during Lent – so it’s up to you to decide whether or not to stick to whatever Lenten penance you imposed on yourself on the Sundays of Lent.

Rest assured that you may enjoy your steak on the great feast of Easter. It’s Easter at the end of the Vigil so enjoy a midnight feast.😃
