I was just wondering when lying becomes a mortal sin and if you could tell me if my lie was a mortal sin:

I do a paper round. In a few weeks, I am going away for a few days so I was planning to book my paper round off for that. However, I wanted more time off so I could just relax at home so I booked the whole week off. They asked me if I was on holiday between the 24th and 31st and I said yes even thought I will only be on holiday between the 27th and 31st. Was this lie a mortal sin?

Seb, honey, why do you burden yourself so?😦 It is not good for you!

There are three conditions to mortal sin: Grievious matter, sufficient reflection, and full consent of the will.

I don’t think your example qualifies, as it is not grievious matter, and you did not sufficiently reflect before you said what you said.

That said, PLEASE talk to a priest or Catholic counselor about your scrupulosity!!! It is not healthy, dear. I highly recommend you take yourself to mission.liguori.org/newsletters/scrupanon.htm.

It really doesn’t have to be a lie. Why can’t you have time off and spend it as you wish whether it is away from home or at home?

Exactly!! For me any day off is a holiday and should be enjoyed as such whether you are on a cruise or watching your roses bloom…God Bless…teachccd
