When does Saturday end and Sunday begin?

Hi,

I’ve been wondering about something. As part of my practice of wearing the Brown Scapular, I abstain from eating meat on Wednesdays and Fridays. I’m a little confused about when my abstinence is supposed to end for the Saturday part, as liturgically speaking, doesn’t Sunday actually begin on Saturday evening, as it is a Solemnity?

If this is the case, do days of abstinence correspond strictly to 24-hour days, or do they end in the evening, when a Solemnity follows that day (whether it’s Sunday or another Solemnity)? Is it okay for me to eat meat on Saturday evening (after First Vespers), or do I have to wait until Sunday morning?

Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂

I’m not really sure, I do know that you are right that a day is sunset to sunset, but I practice 24 hours. Don’t necessarily quote me on this, but I’m not sure that it really matters. As long as you are doing it to bring you self closer to God. I’m a new convert and during Lent all the Catholics I know don’t eat meat only on the Friday 24 hours, that’s Thursday night midnight to Friday night midnight.

I would start by asking your Spiritual Director.

The liturgical Sunday begins with Evening Prayer. The option for an anticpated Sunday Mass begins at 4:00 pm on Saturday evening.

I don’t think these kinds of devotions are tied into the liturgical cycle. I believe that if you abstaining from meat on Saturday, you should abstain for a 24-hour period, from midnight Saturday morning to midnight Sunday morning.

You could also alter your practice to conform to the ancient Jewish practices and abstain from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, but this is why you should check with your Spiritual Director.

Also, your OP is unclear. Are you abstaining on Friday or Saturday?
