I may be mistaken, but I believe the Church considers Sunday as starting at midnight. I am saying that because of the way the canon is written…here is a response on the AaA forum:

Yes, the Saturday vigil Mass fulfills the Sunday obligation:

The obligation of assisting at Mass is satisfied wherever Mass is celebrated in a Catholic rite either on a holy day itself or on the evening of the* previous day*** (canon 1248 §1, Code of Canon Law [1983], emphasis added).

So the “evening of the previous day” for Sunday is Saturday Vigil…which fulfills your Sunday obligation.

I understand this is because in Genesis 1 each day of creation is described in the following manner (from Gen 1:5) “And there was evening and there was morning, one day”. So “In the beginning…” the day began in the evening. That’s why Shabbat starts Friday evening. I always wondered if that was related to us having a Saturday vigil or the Liturgy of the Hours starting Saturday evening.

It starts at 4 PM from a liturgical perspective, as Mass from that point on is considering to fulfill Sunday obligation…right?

From the Code of Canon Law on The Reckoning of Time (Canons 200-203):
Canon 202 §1 In law, a day is understood to be a space of twenty-four hours, to be reckoned continuously and, unless expressly provided otherwise, it begins at midnight…

Canon 1248 §1 The obligation of assisting at Mass is satisfied wherever Mass is celebrated in a catholic rite either on a holyday itself or on the evening of the previous day.

Thanks Todd, so I guess the Church considers 4 PM the start of “evening”…
