I’ve been writing an article about the season of the liturgical year and am kind of confused about the Triduum and Easter. Some articles I looked at said that the Sacred Triduum ends on the evening of Easter Sunday, but others say that the season of Easter begins on the Easter Vigil. I guess I’m kind of confused about when these seasons start/end.

The Easter Season begins with the Easter Vigil and ends with the last Mass of Pentecost.

It runs for 50 days.

The Triduum begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday. The Church considers it “liturgically one day” that ends Lent and leads to the Easter Vigil.

Yeah I know that sounds weird, but it’s what the Bishops say.

The current regulations can be found in the General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar, and are confusing because they do overlap.

But that is the state of things. 🤷‍♂️ :spiral_calendar:

Relevant paragraphs:
  1. The Easter triduum begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday.
  2. The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better as one “great Sunday.”
  3. Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive.

Thanks for the explanation. I didn’t realize it was possible for seasons to overlap.
