In (Catholic) high school there was a girl in the class ahead of me who aspired to be a nun. I knew her because I sat next to her in the school band. She couldn’t go 5 minutes without talking about entering the convent.
Fifteen years ago I saw her again at a high school reunion. She is now a Lutheran minister.
A young lady from my hometown joined a convent in a neighboring diocese.
I grew up Baptist, so there really wasn’t any kind of vocational discernment. If you felt the altar call, you just responded to the best of your ability. Baptists only had ordained ministers.
When I responded to grace and started taking instructions, I also transferred to the local Catholic high school. The present bishop of Nashville, TN, was a classmate. His friends brought him to me and told me of his attraction to the priesthood. I nodded in agreement. Additionally, we were in the same Candy Striper band.
The girlfriend of another classmate got to asking me about vocations. “Here,” I said, quickly discerning that that meant the order that ran our school. Evidentially, she entered, but left before final profession.
My alma mater now has the bishop and a Nashville Dominican in their vocational hall of fame. Another young lady was in discernment with Nashville, last I heard.
No. So far as I know, I was the only one who ever considered it. I wasn’t even Catholic at the time, and had no idea how to convince my parents to let me become Catholic. I gave up on the idea after a time.
I thought I did but couldn’t for medical reasons. Turned out my brother was the one with the vocation. He’s been living in a community for a long time and finally gets ordained in May. He’s found seminary very difficult and its taken a lot longer than usual.
