I am a minor (17) and recently competed for and won a free trip to a leadership camp. I will be traveling in a large group with other youth. We are leaving on a Saturday and arriving on a Sunday, so I emailed one of the coordinators asking if I could attend mass in the town.

This is her reply:

"I understand (and greatly respect) your request about religious services. However, since we are traveling on that Sunday with many students of other faiths, we do not have the ability to take every student to his/her choice of religious service. Instead, we take time to stop … we will have a youth devotional led by the chaperones. We encourage students to bring their Bibles, guitars, etc. (or to at least sit in respectful silence during the devotional). Last year, we had two students with guitars who knew the same worship songs and invited the other campers to sing and pray with them.

While we will arrive at camp by 4 p.m. on Sunday, our camp is located 20 miles from … Once the bus drops us off, we will not have transportation for the rest of that day. Camp activities begin at 4:45 p.m.

I very much appreciate your research on various options, but we require all students to remain with the group during the week of camp."

Would it be acceptable for me to miss mass that Sunday?
