As a third-grade catechist, I taught my students that Mass was not over until the recessional hymn was over. But now I am not so sure I was correct. My understanding was that the hymn was sung prayer to accompany the recessional procession – so don’t leave before the end of that prayer. Please help me to understand for myself and how best to teach my students.

As a matter of liturgical precision, the Mass is over when the priest says so. In other words, when the priest says, “The Mass has ended, go in peace,” the Mass is over. As a matter of respect and courtesy, congregants ordinarily do not leave their places and exit the church until after the recessional hymn is sung.
