When is one excused from mass for mental health reasons?

Never. “Mental health” issues do not justify missing Mass.

PS: This is not “giving medical advice” as the moderator said, its saying one thing does not justify another, a completely religious and non-medical statement. I am saying nothing about the “medical” side of the issue.
Actually mental illness (brain disease) is in many ways worse than another type of a physical disease.

Is not the brain part of the whole body? It is really physical, and affects the brain. Unless you have lived with someone who has a "brain disease) stop judging.

There is really no help in the medical field for these patients, unless they are able to work and have insurance. At least in my state, no doctor or therapist will accept a patient unless they have insurance and that is why there are so many people out there who are very ill and get no help.

I am so tired of people who know nothing about mental illness or other subjects that speak without any knowledge. We will be judged as we judge others. As one poster suggested, try volunteering in a hospital where they have people who are ill with one or another brain disorder, it would be an eye opener.

I say this with charity as I know most people have no idea of the destruction these types of illness have on one who is born with these illnesses and has no choice, nor the effect it has on their families.

God Bless

You’re right: a lot of people don’t know and are too blinded by chasing points for the afterlife to slow down and consider what you are saying.

I hope your Masses for the next year are full of the homeless, the drug addicts, and the dangerously psychotic people who have poorly-controlled mental health issues so that you know what it is like to be around them. And then perhaps next Christmas you can receive your own diagnosis so you will perhaps know what life is like in their shoes. After that I hope you are prescribed heavy doses of medication so that you will know how their side effects can be worse than the original symptoms. Down the line you might find yourself losing your wife, your job, your home, your car and other comforts.

Don’t worry, at least you will never miss Mass.

Excellent post. 👍
Thank you for your kind response. I am personally involved with a very close relative who has the same disease from her father.

No one would wish to be born this way. Many of our great composers and artists also had some type of brain disease and were able to continue with their gifts, today others lose their creativity from the medications or just are too ill.

God Bless
