When is Reading Arousing material a sin?

I have to read Romeo & Juliet for school. and it does have some innapropriate material. Is it only a sin if I entertain a thought about it?
Please tell me when reading innapropriate things is a sin, and if it is grave matter.

In a movie version they did something insulting that I found funny. Was that wrong?

Well, I read Romeo and Juliet when I was fourteen - it was on the curriculum for the Irish state exams then known as the Intermediate Certificate. Can’t say I ever found anything remotely arousing about it, nor did any of my 30 or so classmates.

Perhaps Shakespeare has the answer:

As far as I know, reading Shakespeare is not sinful.

If it is a problem for you, talk to your confessor.

As a general rule, the sin in reading genuine ‘arousing material’ begins the moment you realise it is but make a decision to continue to read it anyway.

Note: I said genuine, as in ‘intended to arouse’. Shakespeare is not soft porn.

As I said, if you have a problem in this regard, take it to your confessor. You don’t HAVE to read it, you know.

Tommorrow Is Pentecost. and I only Received Communion once during The Easter Season.
I went to confession just today, and I’m already wondering If I’ve commited a mortal sin.

I’m sorry if I am being picky, but I didn’t find a 100% answer yet.

Like I said, there is some innapropriate stuff in the play Romeo & Juliet. I am reading it for school, I am not sure if the innapropriate content was ment to arouse. But I’m wondering If I’ve sinned by reading it and/or enjoying it.

Do you by any chance suffer from scrupulosity?

There is NOTHING inappropriate in Romeo and Juliet nor is it meant to arouse anything beyond an appreciation for the craft of the playwright and his ability to portray and articulate the human condition. Shakespeare was not a pornographer.

If you are scrupulous you will find ‘sin’ in just about anything, even the Bible!

You have already fulfilled your Easter duty by confessing and receiving Communion within the Easter season.

Now, please, take your worries to your confessor and follow his direction. No one here is qualified to judge the state of your soul.

let me try to ease your mind a little about this. i do not think you have sinned at all by reading romeo and juliet, and certainly not mortally.

whether or not his intention was to arouse or not doesnt have anything to do with you and your culpability. its your intention that matters.

you were given a reading assignment, to read a piece of classic literature and you found that some of the parts where arousing. you have done nothing wrong.

now lets say that you enjoyed those parts sooo much that you kept going back to reread them because you knew they would cause arousal for you then that would be a different matter.

so as i see it you have not sinned based on the information given in this thread. you need to go on your merry way and forget about all of this.
