If you do not have a sense of self, and neither you, nor anybody else is aware of your existence, are you a person? Is your life worth anything?

My guess would be that human beings have souls and this makes us valuable to God, even if no one else cares.

yes, because human dignity is inherent.
An early human embryo has not have self-awareness and too small to be noticeable is a human person.

As Horton says, “No matter how small you are, you’re still a person.”

what does it mean “to know” of your own existence? are not all of us at various degrees of awareness at various times of our existence. When God initiates life it is but a seed, and it grows and matures and becomes nurtured through those who would love it, so that it too can become a part of the same love which originates and has its very source in God. Some grow faster than others, some are stunted, some are squashed, but as long as a human life exists it has a soul. If it does participate in love here on earth, then it would appear to not be worth anything, but indeed God still loves that soul, because God is love. If yu are not speaking of an unborn soul, but rather someone who feels no one wants or cares for them, then think again - such a person is (name removed by moderator)risioned by themselves and such a person alone holds the key to unlock it, by reaching out and giving what is most desired.

I say yes. An anacephalic has no cerebrum, but is still genetically human, born of a human union. It has a sex and all other human features but normally dies in hours or days, yet even if it could survive say to the age of 5 it still could never have self consciousness since it can not think.

Yes that it has human features, and is genetically human. Does that mean that it has a soul?

Of course - why not? A brain is a body part like any other. If someone born without arms or legs or missing a kidney can have a soul why not an anencephalic?

Well the brain kind of has a more important function (for some of us). If I removed your brain LilyM, would you still be LilyM. Or just the body of LilyM. We are but our thoughts and experiences no?

“I think therefore I am” etc. etc.
