who is the man that flees through his clothing? I always thought that part was intriguing. what does that mean?

Because it’s in Mark and it’s embarrassing, and because the person is not identified, and maybe because there was traditional outside knowledge – most people think it was Mark.

Yup, nothing like a naked escape to echo down the ages.

OTOH, Jesus did say that if somebody wants to take your cloak, you should let him have it.

And naked guy did turn the other cheek. Both cheeks, even.

Some traditions say it is St John, other St Mark. It is speculation.

@PaladinSword, here’s an earlier thread discussing the same question.

Who was the man who ran away naked? Sacred Scripture
. . . and why did St. Mark record this unusual event in his gospel? (Chapter 14:51) I was blessed to hear an explanation last week. If we couple this with St. John’s gospel (18:6) it makes more sense. A cohort (that’s 600 men!) was present to arrest Jesus, and when He spoke the words, “I AM he,” the entire cohort fell backwards on the ground. Jesus’ words “I AM” were uttered with such power and authority, that it knocked them off their feet. Meanwhile, with that same power present, it is b…

The Apostle John.

Iirc, i read a document from the early Church era and Mark never met Christ. He was a later convert.

Not the Apostle John, but some think it is Mark, who is also John Mark from Acts, whose mother’s house was a frequent enough gathering place that the servants recognize Peter by his voice----
11 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I know for sure that the Lord has sent forth His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”
12 And when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.
13 When he knocked at the door of the gate, a servant-girl named Rhoda came to answer.
14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, because of her joy she did not open the gate, but ran in and announced that Peter was standing in front of the gate.
15 They said to her, “You are out of your mind!” But she kept insisting that it was so. They kept saying, “It is his angel.”
16 But Peter continued knocking; and when they had opened the door, they saw him and were amazed.

The boy was possibly Mark.
He was wearing a linen cloth.

All the followers of Jesus abandoned him, the gospel says.

Mark, on the contrary, being unnoticed continued to follow Jesus.

When detected they tried to catch him but they could not because he left behind his linen cloth which was valuable and they preferred the certain cloth to the uncertain young boy.

Holy Bible (Douay Rheims)
Mk 14:51 • ‘And a certain young man followed him, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body; and they laid hold on him.’

Commentary:
Ver. 51. This probably was the owner, or the son of the owner of the garden, who hearing the tumult came to see what was the cause. It must have been a young man from the Greek word νεανισκος. T.
