When must you arrive at Mass in order to fulfill your obligation?

I’m frequently late for mass, a failing I know. My devout friend says unless you arrive in time for the Gospel reading, your attendance at mass doesn’t count as our weekly vigil/Sunday observance. Just how late is “too late”?
