When praying for souls in Purgatory

…if, Heaven forbid, the soul you are praying for is in Hell, does that prayer automatically go to somebody else in Purgatory or does it just go away? Real curious. Been praying for the souls in Purgatory a lot lately, especially with my mom dying 5 months ago. Thanks.

I don’t think God would waste a prayer although I always have the give-this-prayer-to-someone-else fallback thought in the back of my mind whenever I pray.

As I don’t know who is being purified, in Heaven or run off to Hell, names are not mentioned. I used to mention names but it all got a bit difficult, so I pray for all souls in Purgatory without exception and especially for my family members and people I know/knew.

The prayer goes to someone else who needs them.
