When should we let a thread die?

And could we start responding to a thread again if someone else revives it? I’m asking because I have seen threads four to thirteen years old get revived since the website came back up. What’s the protocol?

That’s a good question. In the old forum, the protocol was not to resurrect old threads (threads that had gone dormant for a few months). If someone did reopen such a thread, it was generally locked. I’m not sure if this is still the rule or not. I’m sort of assuming it is, even though the forum FAQ does not specify. I’d be interested to hear @cawebmaster’s thoughts on that.

Hi, Thom!

I think that if there is nothing in place there are two things that can be done:
  1. Moderators could be authorized to kill inactive threads (close/lock them).
  2. Members could advise the person who resurrects the thread that it has been dormant for too long–offer them the opportunity to open up a different line of discussion in a new thread.

I saw the following at the bottom of the page of a thread that was started Sept 18, 12:37 PM

This topic will close 2 years after the last reply.

As of now, most threads will be closed if there has not been a new post within ~2 weeks.
