When to Not Wear a Rosary?

My sister is making her First Holy Communion tomorrow (really exciting!) and her godfather sent her a rosary as a gift; both of my grandmothers are here right now to celebrate, and we were talking about whether or not my sister is able to wear the rosary given that she’s making her First Communion.
The only rule I know is that we are only allowed to wear rosary beads for spiritual reasons (not for show), but one of my grandmothers was saying that she had heard that you also have to have made your First Communion before being able to, or something along those lines. They were wondering what makes it acceptable to wear the rosary, so they wanted me to ask here. Thank you, and God bless! 😃
 
It is generally discouraged to wear a rosary as if it was a necklace. There are some cultures that do this, however. The Rosary is a sacramental and part of a private devotion. If children are encouraged to pray the Rosary before First Communion (and they are), they have the same “right” to wear it as anyone else.
 
There’s no prohibition to wearing your rosary fro a good intention.
When it becomes bling, don’t do it.
I have a gold one that I wear 24-7 under my clothes.
Every priest I’ve ever worked for has said it’s fine.
Many children wear one on their First Communion. But they wear it for devotion, not as jewelry. That’s the difference.

So for me, I wear my rosary all the time, not for fashion, but more to put myself out there as Catholic. Is there wrong in that?

No, but a small crucifix might make more of a statement, since so many people misinterpret our devotion to Our Lady. As I said, I wear mine under my garments…it’s just between me and God. The Rosary, after all, is all about the life of Christ, through the intercession of Our Lady.

I’ve read multiple posts stating such is alright. Since you are wearing it for devotional purposes and not a “fashionable” manner, it should be ok.

I personally don’t wear one. But, I do not condemn those who do wear them.
 
A person does not have to wait until they have made their First Communion in order to wear a rosary. As a child, I was taught not to wear the rosary as a necklace. St. Louis De Montfort in his Secret of the Rosary encouraged wearing of the rosary. He chastises those who think it makes them feel like a peasant. Because of my upbringing, I tend to wear mine under my shirt or blouse. I have also been in workplaces that discourage the wearing of any religious jewelry.
I don’t know why the discouragement from wearing the rosary around the neck while there has never been any objection to wearing a one decade bracelet style rosary. The idea of gang bangers wearing rosaries is a new development, and has nothing to do with why I was discouraged as a child.
Since wearing an Immaculate Conception medal is encouraged, I like a rosary that includes the Immaculate Conception medal.
 
I will wear one as a personal sign of devotion, under my clothing, too. 🙂
