1 Peter 3:19 “In it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison,”
In the Apostles Creed we pray that He descended to the dead. This is in fact what He did. He descended to the Bosom of Abraham, the “realm of the dead” or hell, hedes; whatever you want to call it to free the prisoners. He preached to these prisoners the good news, the Gospel. Those souls who accepted His message, the righteous were raised into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Hebrews 2:14-16
“Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them,** that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,** and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham;”
Through our sins, Adam and Eve, we have been separated. When He died He descended to the realm of hell to bring salvation to the righteous, that same salvation is offered to us. At the moment He died the veil was torn and Heaven open to us.
Matt. 27:50-54
“But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit. And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split, tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised. And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.”
He conquered death by the Incarnation and dying for our sins. In dying He defeated the master of death, the devil.
