When was the Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation established?

Just wanting to know if there was a date back in the early centuries and how did Confession go back then to now. Like any differences etc.

All seven of the Sacraments were established by Christ during his life on Earth. Catholic Answers has a couple of tracts on this Sacrament.

Paul and Brendan are correct, of course, that the Sacrament of Reconciliation (as with all the sacraments) was established by Christ. The way in which it is celebrated has developed over the years. If you want to look at some of that history, I recommend looking in the Old Catholic Encyclopedia.
