Where are the Catholic Schools?

Where are the Catholic Schools? This is the question that drives me crazy.

I have 2 daughters who go to an independant Catholic School that was created by one family in my town. Why doesn’t my parish make a Catholic School? I sure as heck wont send them to the non-denominational school and turn them into fundamentalists, which is exactly what happens to some of the families in my parish as they send their kids to a large fundamentalist Christian school since it is popular.

Why is there 4 other schools in other groups such as the Baptist high school in town. They have half the people and they are able to make small schools and keep them going.

What is wrong? Didn’t the council of Baltimore ask for every parish to have a school?

I see your location as the California Desert… I’m out here too but don’t have a parish school so I’m left to homeschool. There used to be a Catholic school in Barstow but from what I understand, it was closed. Than again, I don’t trust the schools in CA… too liberal. 😦

And I understand about not wanting to send your kids to a different denominational school. My MIL is on my back of sending my kids to a “Christian” school. She doesn’t get it that it’s not an option. If it’s not Catholic, then homeschooling it is. (And even then, the Catholic school has to at least offer Catholic education as its religion class, take kids to Mass once a week and NOT be liberal)

But to answer your question… it costs lots of money and due to the political correctness, it’s very hard to have a functioning truly devout Catholic school (or at least in the areas I’ve seen and been). If there was a Catholic school near us, that was devout to Rome, I’d sooo be volunteering anything I can to that school and sending my kids there.

Catholic schools exist where people support them. In the early years of this country, people thought it was worth the sacrifice to build these schools so they could get a good education and be taught the Faith.

Since a large number of Catholics have become lukewarm in the practice of their Faith in this country, they feel no need to contribute much to the Church. Look at the average collection plate in a Catholic parish. I’d bet you the full amount in that plate that it doesn’t compare with the collection you would find in one of those Baptist churches with a school who have been taught the necessity and value of sacrificial giving.

Some people feel that Catholic schools are no longer worth the sacrifice either because a) The Faith is not important to them, or b) the Faith is **very **important to them but, based on past experience, they have no reason to believe that their children will get a thorough, orthodox presentation of the Catholic Faith, that they will be lucky if their children emerge from these schools with their faith intact, and by all indications these schools are Catholic in name only. In that case, why bother?

that is the wrong question
the actual question is “Where are the Catholic parishes and the Catholics in those parishes willing to embrace tithing and the spirituality of stewardship so that Catholic school may be built, run, and pay teachers and ensure every Catholic child receives this education?”

the bishops, beginning with Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore, in the 19th C identified parochial schools as the key to evangelizing, building up the Church and handing on the faith, and keeping families Catholic. They embarked on a full-fledged plan nationwide to promote Catholic schools, bringing in religious orders to staff them. Every Catholic was taught from the pulpit the need to support parochial schools for the good of the whole church, not just to benefit those parents and children attending. If was a law of the church to send your child to parochial school unless you had a good reason not to. When my brother went to public school for special ed my parents needed permission from the pastor.

When Catholics want Catholic schools bad enough, we will get them. Until then – well, there’s always CCD, which is as good as the parish decides it will be.

What is wrong is that true Catholicsim is no longer being taught in many of our “catholic” schools.

So my guess is that God is closing them down.

My suggestion then, relies heavily on what Bishop Fulton J. Sheen had once said:

***“Send your children to a state university where they will have to fight for their faith,
rather than to a Catholic university where their faith will be taken from them.”
In light of that, I say teach your kids the Catholic faith and then send them to a conservative Christian school.

This way they’ll be challenged in their Catholic beliefs, and therefore become stronger in their faith.
 
I think the main reason for the decline of Catholic schools is the decline of vocations to the religious life. Catholic schools were staffed by nuns and were cheap for a parish to operate because of this. With the declining vocations to the religious life, the Catholic schools have been forced to hire teachers who are not nuns and pay their salaries (which even though they are lower than what teachers make in the public school are still much higher than what was paid to the nuns). This caused the tuition to rise to levels that families cannot afford (plus the families still have to pay for the public schools through their taxes). For instance, when my parents were children, there was no tuition at all; only books needed to be paid for. Now, tuition in my parish school is $3400 for the child of a parishoner. In order to have affordable Catholic schools, we will need many new vocations to the religious life.
 
What can be of more importance than the education of our youth?!!!

Catholic education like any kind of education begins at home, but… if at all possible, we should provide Catholic schools for our children. Yes it can be expensive, but what other cause can be as worthy for our children’s future? To learn at home about God’s love and the “richness” of our Church is vital to the stability of the faith of a child, but to experience this kind of education outside the home and outside the Church itself can increase the quality of that foundation of faith tenfold!

And if we see there is a problem with how our Catholic schools are being run, should we not get in there and push for changes?

I believe that it all stems from a culture ignorant in the importance of life. In this age we do not value any life. Evil has taken even life at it’s purest in the eucarist and stripped it of Gods presence. Evil has taken life in the womb and stripped it of it’s meaning. We have allowed Jesus to be disreguarded in our Churches. So many people have just forgotten the what it is to be Catholic, so why would it seem important to teach our children to be Catholic? Life on earth has little meaning unless there is material value so why would it seem important to have life in heaven? Where is the value? There is little time left after making a material wealthy life to ponder the life in heaven.

I am looking forward to Lent. I unite my hunger in fasting to that of My Father’s hunger for souls.
 
There are plenty of Catholic schools where i live, although i have to admit most of the people i know that have been educated there don’t leave with a devout intention to follow their faith.

In fact, my catechist is a former principal of one of the schools and he told me that most of the pupils he tutored for advanced level religious education were only doing it to increase their chances of going to University.

Integrated schools are cropping up all over my country and usually they don’t delve into one particular faith in any great detail. And as far as i know there are no CCD classes.

Their isn’t really an RCIA program either, im having one on one instruction with a regular parishoner who was recommended by the local priest. And here i was thinking that the No.1 mission of the Catholic Church was the Propogation of the Faith.?
 
Our parish has a grade school, but for years we didn’t have a high school anywhere in our area. The closest was an hour away. We formed a group, raised the money and by the time my oldest was a freshman the school was starting it’s second year. The man who put up most of the $$ is my boss. I have never seen so many families come together over such a good cause!!! We have alot of fund raisers for the school, but we also allow every group (boys basketball, golf, pro-life club, etc.) to raise their own money. Last year we raised over $43,000 by working concession stands for the local university. It takes alot of work from both the students and the parents, but most of us make the best of it and enjoy the time we spend helping out.
 
We have a parish school in a diocese that is “consolidating” schools. We are struggling to keep enrollment up and to keep fundraising up to the pace of the cost of the school. At first the consolidation seemed to be our biggest hurdle, but now I am convinced that our parish leaders have a “sink or swim” attitude towards the school. Even though our REP is weak, the pastor and finance council seem to cater to that group stating that they can’t ask them to fundraise, help out, etc. because they just won’t do it and they don’t want to chase them away. They spend all kinds of energy rescheduling mandatory meetings for these people who never show up, don’t participate, etc. because they don’t want to “lose” them. It is SO frustrating. If we had our leaders participating in our fundraisers and toting the school at Mass and at social events, we’d be much further ahead.

Our school is wonderful and if it goes, it will never come back. Keep us in your prayers!
 
I live in the Metro NYC area and although there is still a large concentration of Catholics in the tri-state area, unfortunately, property taxes are so exhorbidant (average in NJ is $10K per year), that many parish schools have had to close because unless you are very wealthy or very poor, you can not afford to send your children there, especially if you have a large Catholic family.

The good news is that the public schools are considered excellent and that there are a lot of Catholics there. CCD is still a big priority for most families (not all, of course).

It saddens me that my children will not have a Catholic education like I did thirty years ago. But times have changed and we have to adapt to the change. My husband and I have had to step up our faith and make a renewed commitment to their religious education and not simply rely on the schools to do it for us.
 
our diocese has just announced plans to build a new Catholic high school mid-Valley, land was donated, plans have been drawn up, capital campaign is on-going.

An OP mentioned lack of vocations. I agree whole heartedly!

I think that we have aborted many many Priests and Nuns! Along with many many wonderful people who could have made this world a better place to be.😦
 
I feel lucky that my parish has a school. In my city, all the Catholic church’s built in the past 30-35 years have not had schools attached to them. About 15 years ago a regional Catholic school was built in the south part of town. As far as I know, my parish school is going strong and healthy. It helps to have a pastor who was an educator much of his career.

As soon as my retirement money becomes available, I will be supporting it financially. 👍
 
There is only one solution imo. Catholics must have bunches of kids and then pray for and encourage those kids to be called into vocations. The cost of many Catholic schools is quite prohibitive for many parents. It used to be Catholic schools had very low salary budgets because most teachers were Nuns and Priests. That is long gone, which means creating many new vibrant Catholic schools will not happen until Catholics become Catholic again.

Yes, it is a circular statement, yet nonetheless true.

What do you mean by encouraging the kids to be called into vocations? Is that supposed to make a Catholic education less expensive? Seminaries won’t talk to young men until they have college educations. Have you seen the cost of a state college education lately?

My great uncle almost bankrupted my great grandfather’s grocery store paying for his son’s specialized education away from home so he could go to the seminary and become a priest. That was in the 1930’s. In the meantime, his other five children stayed home and attended the parish school.

The reason the Baprist schools are standing and the Catholic schools are falling and perishing is becaus ethey do NOT follow the word of God. They follow manmade doctrine. jesus Christ is NOT blessing the Catholic church but is belissing the Christina schools.

(Make sure you church is following scripture. There are churches that go against scripture. Read this flyer and if your church is against the word of God, you’ll need find a church in agreement with God’s word…a BIBLE FOLLOWING Christian church!”…Most Baptist and Pentecostal churches follow scripture…although not all. You need to make sure they do!

(Make sure you church is following scripture. There are churches that go against scripture. Read this flyer and if your church is against the word of God, you’ll need find a church in agreement with God’s word…a BIBLE FOLLOWING Christian church!”…Most Baptist and Pentecostal churches follow scripture…although not all. You need to make sure they do!
