P.S. If you can get over to Salinas Fr. Anthony Hernandez serves Divine Liturgy there once a month. His regular parish is in Los Gatos, tho it has grown so much they have Sunday DL in Palo Alto now.
He is on Facebook “Fr-Anthony Hernandez”. The parish is on Facebook: “Saint Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church Los Gatos” 🙂

Your response here, FatherSebastian came in my email, because I posted in this thread some time ago. Great to see you on CAF. I’m rarely here and was so happy to discover I could actually remember my password… there are so many I can’t remember. 😊

It’s Marylouise here, Father. 😃 This thread is from 2011. I was already in an Eastern Church, just responded to the OP. I’m pretty sure Fr Anthony no longer has that outreach I mentioned back then. I think it was in Gilroy.

There is a Knanaya Catholic Church in San Jose which is about an hours drive from Santa Cruz. That is the closest Syro Malabar/Knanaya Church I could find in that region. There are however many in San Francisco and the Los Angeles area.

I’ve missed seeing you on CAF! Hang around a while. 🙂

Ha, that’s funny. See you in Berkeley!

Welcome, Father Sebastian! It is good to have another priest on Catholic Answers Forum. I hope you hang around.

We met a few years ago in San Luis Obispo, at the Myrrh-Bearers Retreat and I just met your brother last week at St. George. I’m so happy to have you here.

What’s the history of your parish in Santa Cruz anyhow?

The Greek Catholics of our region migrated here originally to work in the mines and mills and there were enough of them to organize parishes throughout the whole area.

Santa Cruz is wine producing country, and I’m familiar with the Spanish exploration of the area. When did the county get a sufficient number of Syrian and Arabic Catholics to get the ball rolling, and what was the process?

And I was at the same Retreat, thanks to my friend babochka helping us lonely Russians to be invited. 🙂 I think it was Father, then Fr Deacon, Sebastian’s wife Khouria Leila, and his daughters who were there at the Retreat as well.🙂

We are in the Santa Clara Valley (Silicon Valley). The population is huge. Santa Cruz is a small city on the other side of the coastal range. It’s basically a beach town. There is, however, a nice Greek Orthodox Church there.
