I am confused on the presidential canidates. Kerry supports the democratic party that is pro abortion and pro gay agenda. While Bush is for extending the war another 8 years, asking for billions more to the war debt and has done nothing to improve our economy work wise, and he has no real health care plan for the underpriviledged. What does our church advise for November. Is there a web site that recommends certain canidates and why? Any help would be appreciated.Thank you.

rarndt01,

The Church won’t tell you who to vote for. This is the way, I look at things.
  1. Code:
Make a list of the candidates' posiitons on a variety of issues.
  2. Code:
Decide which of those issues have a clear Catholic answer versus those where Catholics might legitimately disagree. For example, Catholics can legitimately disagree on US immigration policy. They can't disagree on abortion.
  3. Code:
When there is a moral question, we are instucted to look at proportionality. In other words issues that may make someone's life easier probably don't carry as much weight as those that deprive someone of life.
  4. Code:
Hopefully by this point a pattern has emerged that will be helpful.
There are a number of websites that are endorsing Candidates. Each has it’s own agenda (for good or bad) and none, that I know of, has Church endorsement. If there is an issue you feel is dearest to your heart, look to the organizations that are most active regarding that issue. But only AFTER you have conducted the exercise above or something like it.

This is of course just my opinion. I am sure you will get many more.

The website to check out is right here with Catholic Answers catholic.com/library/voters_guide.asp

According to their Voters guide, When in doubt we as Catholics must basically take the lessor of two evils.

They list 5 Non-negotiable issues.
Abortion
Euthanasia
Embryonic Stem Cell Research
Human Cloning
Homosexual Marriage

As you mentioned, Kerry is pro-choice & pro-homosexual union therefore he is at least 0 for 2 in the “Catholic Top 5”

So it looks like Bush

God bless this country & Lets pray that the Holy Spirit will guide the leaders whoever they are.

Deacon Scott

Unless I’m mistaken, Senator Kerry is 0 for 5 on all 5 of the non-negotiables, and President Bush is 5 for 5. A Catholic who takes their faith seriously could not possibly support John Kerry for president. You might not like George Bush either, but based on the 5 non-negotiables, he is a far superior choice.

I suggest you read the statement by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, “Faithful Citizenship: A Catholic Call to Political Responsibility”, (www.usccb.org/faithfulcitizenship/bishopStatement.html)
Here are some selected quotes:

“We believe that every human life is sacred from conception to natural death, that people are more important than things, and that the measure of every institution is whether it protects and respects the life and dignity of the human person.”
. . .
“Every person has a fundamental right to life–the right that makes all other rights possible.”
. . .
"In protecting human life, “We must begin with a commitment never to intentionally kill, or collude in the killing, of any innocent human life, no matter how broken, unformed, disabled or desperate that life may seem.”
. . .
“Laws that legitimize abortion, assisted suicide, and euthanasia are profoundly unjust and immoral. We support constitutional protection for unborn human life, as well as legislative efforts to end abortion and euthanasia.”
