They are still around. Not in every state, but they have centers near many cities. Not sure if they would classify as a “commune”. Not really sure what that means. It is a personal prelature in which people can choose to become members. Numerary members(lay people who choose to remain celibate in order to give more of themselves to God and to the works and apostolate of Opus Dei) usually live in houses with other numeraries of the same sex- so it is community living. They don’t give up modern things or their freedom and they still have jobs and friends and hobbies in the real world. It is not like religious life where one takes vows of poverty and obedience.

There are some Catholic or Christian communities in some places in the U.S. made up of devout families who want to support each other and live a more Christian lifestyle

rose, thanks for sharing
this information.

There is a group called Emmaus here in france that work together, I think they may also have a kind of camp with cabins as well.

What about a third order? Some are more extensive and require more of a commitment than Opus Dei, but not like a monastic order such as the Benedictines or Fransiscans. Some have housing and achapel, others, like third order Fransiscans have meetings and some prayer obligations, but not communal living. Legion of Mary? Is that not another group?
