Where can I find authoritative instructions and advice to priests on how to perform the sacrament of Penance? I’ve already read all of the Canons on the sacrement and I was wondering if there was a document for Penance similar to the GIRM for the Mass.

Yes each Sacrament has a Rite for it. The Sacrament takes place within the Rite. You are looking for the Rite of Penance. There is also a great Papal document on Penance worth reading.

I’ve never been able to find the Rite of Penance online. Does anyone know if it can be found somewhere on the web?

I hyave most of this in printed or CD form so I never look on line. You might find it in the EWTN library.

as far as i’ve been able to find so far, only the introduction to the rite is online.

here is one of them: catholicliturgy.com/index.cfm/FuseAction/DocumentContents/Index/2/SubIndex/40/DocumentIndex/446

the introduction is really what you want, if you are looking for the advise and instruction the Church gives that is above and beyond the rubrics.

stick to Church documents on this subject. there is a lot of liberal garbage out there. i’ve wasted good money on what i thought were reputable publishers, no use in others doing the same.
