Where did God come from?

This is the question that my 15 yr old son posed the other day. I said, “honey, He didn’t come from anywhere, He’s always been and I think it’s one of those things that our little minds can’t be wrapped around.” It wasn’t satisfying his appetite.

So now I pose the ?:confused: to my forum friends. Can I get some help? Is there literature for him to read that wouldn’t intellectually bore him.

Anything that happens has a cause. And you can go from cause to cause until you get to an Uncaused Cause. That we call God. He is the Last Cause because He has always been.If something had caused Him, then he would not be the Last Cause. That is why God has been called He Who Is, that is He whose nature it to exist. Everything else that we can know could or could not exist. Only God necessarily exists becasue we need a Last Cause to explain everything else.

Sad to say, but I can’t think of a better way to say it. I mean, SOMETHING had to come first. If not God, then SOMETHING had to create God, which of course, would make that SOMETHING greater than God, which would make IT God.

Get my point?

Just a word to the wise, these links are to a Protestant site that holds a strictly Creationist (young earth) viewpoint. It is not necessary to be a strict Creationist to prove God’s existence.

Perhaps you can steer your (obviously bright) 15 year-old to the web site of popular Catholic philosopher, speaker, teacher and writer Peter Kreeft. He has excellent material on this, and even some free downloadable talks in mp3:

God is not a name of a person, it is his identity. One of the meaning of God is that which is not created.

It looks like the child is considering the word ‘God’ to be someone’s name. ‘God’ is like an adjectif or title. Like President, or Teacher.

He is ‘God’ who was not Created.
He is ‘Teacher’ who instruct people about something.
He is ‘President’ who is the highest authority in government.
etc…

Then, who is God?
the Father is God, the Son is God, the Holy Spirit is God.
They are God, because they were not created. Only them were not created.
