Where does a Bishop say Mass when he is not doing it in the Cathedral or at any of the other parishes in the diocese? Why doesn’t he say Mass in the Cathedral when he is at home? We doesn’t he at least say Mass in the Cathedral on Sundays when he is at home? The pope rather say Mass in his private chapel but I do not know why. Is it easier for people to say or attend Mass in a private chapel?

Which Bishop? Most Bishops where I am are rostered around the Diocese to celebrate Mass.

The Bishop of my diocese, on the days when he is not scheduled to celebrate a public Mass somewhere, says Mass in the chapel of the episcopal see.

Why is it important for him to say Mass in a private chapel?

The Bishops I know dont get down time as there are not enough Priests to say Mass at every Parish. When they travel to Rome every 5 or 7 years, they all celebrate Mass together.

I don’t think it’s the private chapel per se which matters, it’s probably more that priests are encouraged to say a Mass daily, and the private chapel is convenient.

He’s not celebrating every day at the cathedral because he isn’t its only priest, he’s not even the parish’s curate, and public celebrations there do not hang on his presence – and there has to be a place for every priest on the pastoral team on the Mass rostrum.

To be a bishop is to spend life on the road! Some haver the luxury of private chapels but it would be a rare treat for them to be able to say mass there on a Sunday. Instead, they’re often in far flung part of the diocese for confirmations, pastoral visitations or other events. If anything, only having one of these in a day is either due to good fortune or the remote nature of the place where the event is taking place! So it’s not so much a question of “where does he say mass when he’s at home” but more “when is he at home”!

is it easier to attend Mass in a private chapel than the church?
I kind of prefer smaller chapel to big churches. I really do not care for big groups of people.
So it is easier to see why anyone would prefer a smaller chapel to a big church.
I am not sure I would have a problem with a church with lots of monk/friars but all he things going on at Mass can be too much. So it is not just the crowd.

In “normal times”, our Bishop is out around the Diocese celebrating Mass on most Sundays. He is out among his flock often. Now, he does celebrate special Masses at the Cathedral, or at the Chapel on Diocese grounds.

There is a chapel in the House of Discernment where the Seminarians and Bishop live and right now that is where he celebrates Mass that is streamed.

Many bishops publish their diaries on the diocesan website. You can see where the bishop is and where he is celebrating Mass. Obviously, that will not apply during this pandemic.
