Where do Maccabees go?

Hello,

Where exactly do 1 and 2 Maccabees go in the Bible? I have seen them right before Psalms, right after Malachi - so where do they actually go?
 
Depends on which Bible you use.D/R its after Malachi(This is chronilogically correct,the Maccabees are history preceding the New Testament Era.The NAB groups Books by subject,history,poetic,prophetic ect.Hope this helps.Ward:)
 
I think that at one time it was required that they be placed after Malachi and immediately before the New Testament. It appears that this was to counter the Protestant practice at that time of placing them in an appendix at the very end of the Bible.

More recently they have been right after Esther as a completion of the historical books to which they are more akin…

RSV-CE also has Maccabees after Malachi. NJB has Maccabees after Esther. Personally, I think the two books of Maccabees are more properly after Esther, since they are historical books, not prophetic books. Malachi was the last prophet.

On a side note, I was blessed enough to read the first reading at Mass today from Maccabees. It was the story of Eleazar, where he is tortured for not eating the pork, or even pretending to eat it.

That is one of my favorite stories of the OT. I felt proud to be able to present this reading to the congregation. What a man!!!

I read this title and thought, “well, in the ‘old days’ we would have said they went to Limbo and then were elevated to heaven after the Resurrection of Christ, but I suppose now they would be considered as going straight to heaven.”

I’m an idiot. :o

I’ve been confused about what a thread is really about myself, sometimes. I actually sent a BPR for a thread that I thought was a duplicate. It was not. I just did not read it carefully. :blushing:

Keep in mind there has never been any particular significance to how books in the Bible are arranged.

Russian Bibles frequently have John first, because John 1 is the Gospel of Pascha (Easter), when the Lectionary year begins.

That’s interesting. What order do the rest of the Gospels go?
 
Just for trivial, the current official Bible of the Latin Church, the Nova Vulgata places the 2 books of Maccabees after the prophet Malachi.

I’ve always been puzzled by the placing there. Anyone knows why?
