When my husband and I met with our parish priest to discuss marriage one of the questions he asked was if we had discussed family size. Smiling we told him that we would leave it up to God, when he pushed further for a set number I laughed and answered honestly, “Well, we figured 15 is a good number.” He was shocked and suggested that instead of having children we should get a dog.
My husband and I have been married now almost two years and have one baby on earth and one in heaven. Despite our priest’s advice we are open to life and the gift of children. We feel that God has blessed us richly for this, but it is still sometimes overwhelming to be bombarded with anti-life messages from friends family and unfortunately some members of the Church. Many people have called us selfish for wanting a large family because we don’t have much financally.
Have any of you experienced this? How do you cope? Are there any support networks that you find are good? What do you do when clergy members are unsupportive? Are we in any way wrong or selfish for wanted a large family? I’d love to hear anyone’s family stories or testimonials.
