Where does one go when they desire to serve Christ more radically?

Where does one go when they want to serve Christ more fully? Where could a newly married couple (no kids) go together where they could serve for a couple months? Where would married “empty-nesters” go along this same line but in a more permanent fashion? Is there something like this out there for Catholics? Mormons have it. SDA have it. Yet I am having a hard time finding something like this for someone who desires to serve Christ more perfectly, who is already married, and wants to live simply, perhaps in a commune or something.

Any ideas?

Tempus fugit, memento mori…

What about looking into missionary trips?

Many parishes have have “sister parishes” in poor areas of the world… and they’re always seeking assistance…

Just a thought…

Catholic Relief Services has a directory of domestic and foreign missionary opportunities, for a few months, a couple of years, lists location, qualifications etc. Or try the Jesuit volunteer corps or Catholic Extension for mission opportunities in this country, such as through Glenmary.

Of the little that I have seen so far, CRS is probably the closest to what I am referring to. Does anyone know of something like this that is perhaps possibly a little more permanent? Something for someone who would sell all they had and follow Christ?

Maybe you could talk to the Vocations Director for your diocese. I know most people think of them in regards to vocations to the priesthood, but maybe he could give you direction in regards to your apparent calling, but as a married couple.

I knew a married couple who worked for a year with St Frances Cabrini society.

This may be it:

CMC was founded to offer lay people the opportunity to serve for one to two years in the United States or overseas. CMC missioners make a difference while ministering in education, health care, child care, pastoral ministry, and social services, while living simply in a support community, with Cabrini sisters and sometimes with other missioners.

If you want to serve Christ Jesus more radically, don’t go anywhere.

Find the ‘Calcutta’ in your own neighbourhood and start to do something about it.

In my prayers

The Little Portion hermitage littleportion.org/ is a Catholic community that includes married couples.
