When a woman has an abortion, the baby dies. Not born into sin, does the baby go to heaven? Is the baby in the communion of saints?
Can we name the baby? Can she intercede for us?

Dear Ibcatholic,

1-Unborn goes to heaven.
2-All born children go to heaven (until they choose their religion) after that they will be under God’s judgment.

Again, this is a Muslim answer, a Catholic may agree on #1 but not #2.

Is the baby in the communion of saints?: No.

Can we name the baby?: Yes.

Can she intercede for us?: No.

I did my best,
ISYD

The Church says that we entrust him or her to God’s mercy.

At best the unborn baby sees God face to face.

At worst, if the common opinion since St. Thomas Aquinas is correct, he or she is happier than the happiest human being on earth can ever be, in a natural state.

We don’t have much certainty in this area. But we hope.

As to naming an aborted baby, certainly you can if the child was yours. If not, I suppose it still might be helpful in remembering to pray for the repose of the baby’s soul. 🙂

I wouldn’t think we could ask for an aborted baby’s intercession who hadn’t been baptized. We can not be certain she would hear our petitions if she is now having a merely natural experience of God.

The baby is a human person. The baby is baptised in blood and innocence.

The baby contracts original sin, as being a soul created by man and woman.

The baby “goes” to whereever it is that God sends nearly perfect souls who have not commited ANY intentional sin and are absolutely perfect candidates for “salvation” according to God’s grace via the case of “invincible ignorance”.

Where that “place” is, I don’t know, personally. I imagine it’s essentially a “purgatory super-light” type of place.

The baby IS in the communion of saints, just as any soul is according to God’s given grace in their individual case.

All persons must be named.

She can interceed for us, as any person not utterly damned can hear us and can pass on our prayers to Jesus to the best of their ability, whatever that ability may be.

It all sums to this: The aborted person is a FULL person with only extremely extremely limited “culpability” of intentional sin (if any at all), yet possessing of the same taint of original sin as the rest of us, and who “could” be termed a martyr, but otherwise is exactly as one born.

This is ONLY my opinion, not necessarily that of the Catholic Church.

What happens to the baby has NOT been divinely revealed to us. Nor has the church reached a conclusive decision via reasoning and theology.

But take hope in that God is infinitely more merciful than any human in history. Therefore I know what I PERSONALLY think will happen as a result, but you should know that God hasn’t revealed the answer to this one definitively.
