Where exactly is the devil?

I became acquainted recently with a woman in our parish. She seems to be very knowledgable about our faith and the bible. She was discussing the age old question of why bad things happen to good people. This was her answer:

“The devil rules here. We are recipients of God’s love, if we ask for his love, and love him. But because the devil rules here, we are victims of our choices as well as the choices of others - which explains why bad things happen to good people.”

Here is my question. Does the bible say the devil rules here? Is that common knowledge or her opinion? Where exactly do we believe the devil to be? Ephesians 6:12 talks about evil spirits in the heavens? Evil spirits in heaven? Help!

Yeah, there are a few different places in the Bible where it says that the devil rules the kingdoms of the world. It also says that God rules the kingdoms. In Job, we see that Satan must ask God permission before harming people, so it’s clear that Satan’s authority is still bent to the service of God’s will.

One can see Satan’s authority during Jesus’ temptation, when Satan offers him all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him, for the kingdoms, he says, have been handed over to him and are his domain.

In Revelation, we hear about the devil handing over the kingdoms of the world to the First Beast.

In one of the epistles, Satan is called the king of the sky. Jesus refers to the devil as “ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11).

I don’t remember anywhere in the Bible stating that Satan rules this earthly world. Although, I do agree with what she says about our choices and how our choices affect us and others.

T say that Satan rules this world is to say that the Holy Spirit is subordinate to Satan. Isn’t that blasphemy? Leif Erikson made very good references to the Scripture regarding Satan’s power. However, I feel that those references are more reflective of what God allows Satan to do. That is, he’s allowed to tempt us and to fool us, but to rule as in having complete authority is not what I understand Scripture to be saying.

She hit the nail on the head.

That’s not what Jesus meant when he said Satan rules the world. We can see from Job that, as you say, Satan only can do what God allows him to do. Satan rules people that reject God’s rule. When people submit themselves to God’s rule, they become “in the world but not of the world.”

I agree that there’s temptation and deception. I definitely don’t think that the devil has “complete authority,” for he’s subservient to God. But we can also see that he can have a direct, real impact in the world, through people or other means. For instance, Jesus said to the Jews who were trying to kill him, once, “you always do the will of your father the devil.”

Humans who do Satan’s will are literally his material tools and servants in the world. They have submitted to his will through their own free wills, and thus have become his aids, rather as demons are, though obviously to a lesser extent, because their corruption is incomplete.

Diocletian clearly did Satan’s will when he initiated the worst persecution Christians have ever suffered, shortly before the Medieval Ages dawned.

Hitler clearly was also doing what Satan wanted. If the Jews who were trying to kill Jesus were always doing Satan’s will, as Jesus said, then certainly Hitler and many of the Nazis were. People can be, in the world, children of the light or children of the darkness, or people perhaps in the process of becoming one or the other.

But Satan can get people killed, or raped, or verbally abused or harassed. He can dominate and manipulate earthly politics. He can do this not only through the influence of demons, but also through the willing service of humans who freely submit (unknowingly) to the will of the devil. Satan can truly manipulate economic, political or military policies, as well as the religious or moral perspectives of billions of people that have yielded to his desires. He can give orders and see them done around the world, as I have no doubt he is doing in Darfur, just like any king could.

So Satan really is the ruler of this world. He is, because the world freely chooses to serve him. But servants of Christ are in the world, yet not of the world, and they are not bound to the power of the devil. As Jesus said, “I have given you power to trample on snakes and scorpions and all the powers of the enemy.” We belong to another kingdom, so Satan cannot rule our fates. He can only dominate people who choose him instead of God.

There aren’t any evil spirits in Heaven. There are evil spirits in the material heavens. There are also evil spirits in the spiritual world, though not in the godly spiritual world.

I sometimes think that God made the earth!!
And the devil made man to destroy the earth…
At this moment its seems believable, Just look at what we are doing to the Earth… We are like a cancer to Mother nature.

I think that the devil is behind man’s destruction of the Earth. Not behind the existence of man, though :p.

Re Eph 6:12: Note it says “heavens”, not “heaven”. It refers to the whole expanse of space above the earth.

Re the devil ruling here: the devil has definitely been allowed by God to be active here on earth. The following are some Scripture passages that the woman in your parish was no doubt referring to.

Eph 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out;

John 14:30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me;

John 16:11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Satan’s power is not unlimited tho. God is always in control.
As far as his power with individuals, that has more to do with the choices of the individual (to obey God and be under God’s power and protection; or to reject God and place oneself within Satan’s area of domain).
