Where in the Bible are we told to have only one Baptism? Does it say that two Baptisms constitute a grave sin?

Hi Exporter!
Ephesians 4:5 tells us that there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism”. Taking that apart briefly, those who claim we should/can have more than one baptism, seldom say that we should have more than one Lord, or more than one faith.

Futhermore, Col.2:11-12 tells us that baptism is the New Covenant “circumcision of Christ”. Again, how often can one be circumcised? Once your circumcised, well… the effect has forever been realized. So with baptism, once baptized, the effect has been realized.

Many protestants believe that baptism is only an ordinance or symbolic. If this is the case, then I suppose that it doesn’t matter how many times you do something symbolic. However, with a complete understanding of the effect that baptism has on our souls, it logically is an effect that once achieved is completed.

As far as a statement that it is a grave sin to be baptized twice, I do not know of one. Although, it seems to me that one has to ignore the meaning of baptism to think it can be done twice, to ignore the true meaning of a sacrament, to me, would be grave.

My two cents!

The BIBLE does not say it’s sinful to be baptized twice. The Catholic Church, however, has maintained from ancient times that a person cannot be baptized “again” if already validly baptized. This is a de fide doctrine (it must be held by all the Faithful). So a Catholic with knowledge of this who participated in a “re-baptism” would be guilty of at least a venial sin (and, depending on his/her knowledge and intent, possibly a mortal sin).

However, the Church does perform “conditional baptisms” for people who underwent a prior baptism of questionable authenticity (or uncertainty).
