hey,I’m talking with some friends a/b this and I’m pretty new with the BIble. Where does the BIble say sex is for a commited couple?

Sex is not for mere “committed” couples. Sex is for the exclusive use of MARRIED couples. Only.

(Quotes from the Jerusalem Bible)

“The body—this is not for fornication [pre-marital sex]” (1 Cor 6:13).
“Yes, it is a good thing for a man not to touch a woman; but since sex is always a danger, let each man have his own wife and each woman her own husband” (1 Cor 7:1-2)
“There is something I want to add for the sake of widows and those who are not married: it is a good thing for them to stay as they are, like me [celibate] but if they cannot control the sexual urges, they should get married, since it is better to be married than to be tortured” (1 Cor 7:8-9).
“But the legacy for cowards, for those who break their word, or worship obscenities, for murderers and** fornicators**, and for fortune-tellers, idolaters, or any other sort of liars, is the second death in the burning lake of sulphur” (Rev 21:8).

MATTHEW 19
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for FORNICATION, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
JOHN 8
41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of FORNICATION; we have one Father, even God.
ACTS 15
20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from FORNICATION, and from things strangled, and from blood.
29 That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from FORNICATION: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
ACTS 21
25 As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from FORNICATION.
ROMANS 1
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, FORNICATION, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
1 CORINTHIANS 5
1 It is reported commonly that there is FORNICATION among you, and such FORNICATION as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife.
1 CORINTHIANS 6
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for FORNICATION, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
18 Flee FORNICATION. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth FORNICATION sinneth against his own body.
1 CORINTHIANS 7
2 Nevertheless, to avoid FORNICATION, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.
1 CORINTHIANS 10
8 Neither let us commit FORNICATION, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
2 CORINTHIANS 12
21 And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and FORNICATION and lasciviousness which they have committed.
GALATIANS 5
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, FORNICATION, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
EPHESIANS 5
3 But FORNICATION, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
COLOSSIANS 3
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; FORNICATION, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
1 THESSALONIANS 4
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from FORNICATION:
JUDE 1
7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to FORNICATION, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
REVELATION 2
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit FORNICATION.

I once had a priest explain to me that marriage really happens when a couple commits to one another and not at the altar. I asked him, “Say a couple does this commiting to one another. Then they go off and exchange vows with other people in front of God and a Catholic priest at the altar. Are they now living a lives of adultery?”

He answered, “Well that would take a cannon lawyer to figure out!” I am not a cannon lawyer, but I think I have it figured out.

Liberals!

In a certain sense your priest was right, as the sacrament is made by the man and woman in question. The “stamp of legitimacy” is pretty important, however, because living in potential mortal sin is a SCARY burden to carry with you. If possible, ALWAYS err on the side of a formal, Church sanctioned wedding!!!

I would like more elaboration on this question, where the tradition for a committed couple came from. Moreover, where does it say that a man can only have one wife? Wasn’t there polygamy in the old testament? I was asked this question on a test, and I still don’t know the definitive answer.

There is also adultery and incest but that doesn’t make it right.

The first example of polygamy in the Bible occurs with Lamech, descendent of Cain who marries Adah and Zillah. Lamech boast of being 11 times as bad as Cain. The second reference to polygamy is in Genesis chapter 6 where the spread of wickedness is explained. Gen 6:2 “the sons of God (descendents of Seth) saw that the daughters of men (descendents of Cain) were fair; and they took to wife such of them as they chose”. In scripture every union that involves polygamy causes trouble, even if those people that are involved are considered patriarchs. Jacob/Israel with is marriages to the two sisters Leah and Rachel bring a host of problems. Even King David’s family is ripe with problems caused by “divided loyalties”. King Solomon’s down fall was his many wives.

In the Old Testament monogamous marriages between a man and a woman are celebrated, Rebekah and Isaac, Moses and Zipporah, Ruth and Boaz, Tobiah and Sarah. Each of these unions is used as an example to show the righteousness of the monogamous marriage.

Genesis 2: 24 Tells us what God planned “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.” Jesus makes it clear when speaking about marriage and divorce with the Pharisees. (see Matthew 19). I think He would answer the question of polygamy in the same way He answered the question about divorce. “Because of the hardness of your hearts…, but from the beginning it was not so.”

Jesus teaches us that the two shall become one body, not the three or four will become one body.

Polygamy is it’s own punishment. As I tell my wife often, she’s ruined me for other women. Why would anyone want more than one??? LOL. It always makes me wonder what Solomon did to tick off God so bad, I mean he had like 1,000 wives/concubines. And they called him “wise” NOT!!!
