"Where is this in the Bible?"

I have a quick question. I responded to a Protestant on another forum and someone else responded.

This is what I quoted:
St. Cyprian, De lapsis (+251 AD):“Let each confess his sin while he is still in this world, while his confession can be received, while satisfaction and the forgiveness granted by the priests is acceptable to God”

Show me in Biblical Scripture from the New Testament - preferably a King James (since I don’t personally trust either of the Catholic versions) - where a priest is the one who grants forgiveness.

Ask him to explain John 20:19-23. Especially verse 23.

How can he not personnally trust the Catholic Bible, since the Catholics are the ones that gave him the Bible in the first place?

As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” (John 20:21-23)

“Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Matthew 18:18)
 
John 20:23: If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.

I think when the verse says the forgiveness of sins it is talking about those already in the covenant community and not unbelievers. This is about church discipline and not about justification, since the apostles did not go out and just say to the unbeliever that their sins are forgiven and then move on from there.

Certainly believers are the only ones who can be forgiven by a priest. It would be senseless for an atheist to confess his sins and continue in his heresy/apostasy.

When you say that a priest forgives sins, do you mean that the priest can forgive sins on the vertical level between God and man or on the horizontal level between man or man?

Both. (Although it is often prudent to also seek forgiveness horizontally from the person you offended)

Exactly! Thank you! I read from a well-meaning protestant in one of the threads once that the reason that he/she did not put much stock in Tradition was because it is “unreliable”. Meaning, how do we know, we know, what we know? get my drift? So as us Catholics regularly defer to the early Fathers and Tradition, it seems as though the protestants disregard all of that without giving sacred tradition even the benefit of the doubt!

… Don’t play by his rules because he is setting you up to lose some place along the way. If he rejects that truth of the Catholic Church, have him PROVE to you that the King James version of the bible is indeed the Word of God.

Catholics accept the bible as the Word of God because the Catholic Church declared it so. If he does not accept that authority, then how does he know that the bible is indeed the Word of God?

The King James Bible wasn’t given to someone on a mountain top. It wasn’t brought down by an angel. Have him PROVE to you that the bible is the Word of God.
