For a couple of years, I have been sending my old copies of Magnificat to the Correctional Ministries Office of the Houston, Texas Diocese.

They have sent me very nice thank you notes, so we know they can use them.

Here’s the address.

Archdiocese of Galveston / Houston

They said they love the Magnificat’s, and generic Christian titles such as from TAN books … e.g., “Catechism of Mental Prayer”. They really like the TAN Books small booklets.

But they can’t use things such as CA’s “Pillar of Fire” because it’s too much like proselytizing.

Recently some Mormon missionaries visited our neighborhood.

I gave them a recent copy of Magnificat.

Now I have a small pile of tracts, TAN booklets and some of the “Pillar of Fire” booklets from CA … and the next time a JV or some other group comes by, I will have some ready material to reverse proselytize them with.

😉

Some people dump them in the pamphlet rack at Church. The disappear rather rapidly; so there a lot that want them…

Hi Al!

I have lots of back copies of New Oxford Review. I think I just recycled a bunch, but I keep rec’ing the print copy monthly, so wouldn’t mind if there were some place to send 'em to.

Maybe I’ll start sending them to my fellow parishioners, esp. the ones who go to Call to Action conventions – JK. 😉 That wouldn’t be nice. Of course, I’d obliterate my name and address off the label 1st.

I just don’t know anyone who really likes to read as much as I do I guess.🤷

God bless,
Mimi

Mimi - I, and several others, dump all of our old Catholic magazines in the Pamphlet rack at Church. They go fast.

Do remove, or obliterate, your name and address before leaving them.

I absolutely love going to estate sales (much to the dismay of my DH  ). Often times they are at Catholic homes and I will find some very beautiful Catholic items. Lately I’ve been rescuing Catholic Bibles that I find, usually they sell them for $1 or less. I have not done anything with them yet, but I can’t bear to just leave them behind knowing that much of the stuff will go to the dumpster if it is not sold.

I’ve been wondering where to send them, I don’t really want to just leave them at Church. I love the idea of sending them to a prison ministry - does anyone know how I would find one in the Detroit area?

But call them first to see what they are allowed to accept and what they are allowed to distribute.

There may be various rules.

For example:

Faith-based prison-ministry program called too religious gets its day in court

[can’t make this stuff up]

And this parish has a Prison Ministry, but, again, call first before sending anything.

It seems every year in CCD we have kids who do not have a Bible, same for RCIA - people coming in who do not have a Catholic Bible.

Perhaps these two ministries at your own Parish could use them?

I agree. Old Magnificats can help people looking for conversion understand some regular Catholic practices, such as the Order of the Mass.

I have heard that some dioceses and some parishes don’t like unsolicited material being left in the literature racks. The stuff gets tossed.

So it’s really important to contact the folks ahead of time.

Hee hee; I tried doing that with a JW once. She just walked away.
So, perhaps that’s why they’ve been leaving me alone for the last few yrs, which may be a good thing!

If they ever come back, & if I can get a question in edgewise, I’ll try to get an answer to "Where did the Bible come from? Who said ‘These are the only writings which we can trust to be God’s Word?’ " Y’know; who decided the Table of Contents. I think that’s a great question that some may not have thought about.

God bless,
Mimi
