Where to tastefully hang a 4 foot crucifix?

My mother gave me a crucifix for our home as an early X-mas gift. Very beautiful but the only problem it is 4 feet tall.

I originally wanted to hang it above my headboard in my bedroom but it does not fit.

I do not know if it will look tacky having it above the entertainment center downstairs in the living room but because it is so big - I am not sure.

I am also considering to place in on the stairwell since we have a large and tall wall there going upstairs to the bedroom - and it will symbolize as protection upstairs for us while we sleep.

This is my first religious gift - so I am not sure where to tastefully place it. *my mom has tons of saints and crosses all over her house.

Ideally, somewhere where you can pray before it. So perhaps not the stairwell?

What a lovely gift to receive!

Well, it really is a matter of taste and preference so if you ask five people you’ll probably get twenty-five answers ;). Really anywhere that has enough space for it should be fine. I agree that being able to pray before it would be ideal, but at that size you really don’t have to be too close to it for it to serve its purpose!

If I were choosing a place for it, I’d try to find a prominent location without much around it, so it kinda stands on its own. We have a relatively small townhouse so it would probably be a challenge to find a good spot for it, especially considering it would need to be in a place that the cats couldn’t mess with it.

If you live near to your mother and she can come over, maybe you could involve her in brainstorming some good places for it (assuming you trust her aesthetic judgement ;)).

God bless!

I agree about having it somewhere devotional, but above the TV seems strange to me too, not tacky exactly. Do the doors on the entertainment center close, or would you feel like you were praying to the television? I sympathize because that is the most suitable spot in my house as well for a piece of that magnitude. We have a shelf in the corner of the room with a crucifix, statues, and hooks for our rosaries, a 4 foot crucifix would actually fit nicely over it, but we have a high ceiling in this room. Hope that you find a good solution.

I agree to hang it where it can be a focal point. If the wall in the stair is visible from the living room, that would work. My house has very few real walls on the main level, so we’d have trouble too. How about opposite the couch? Or on a ‘side’ wall (like next to the door/arch into the dining room)?

I would not hang it over the TV.

I like the stairway idea. That’s usually a lot of empty space, and a four foot cruxifix would fill it nicely. As you get other religious artwork, it can go there too, as a sort of ‘gallery’

If you have a foyer or a wall near the entrance of your house, that’s where I would put it.

4 feet is pretty big

The perfect place I think is somewhere where there is a high ceiling, perhaps a Living Room/Foyer type area. The 4’ crucifix is clearly a showpiece, so it needs to be in an area where it is easily visible and is the focal point when someone walks into the house or room.

Honestly, I think ideally we would have at least one crucifix in each room/visible from each room, so one can look at the cross through out the day and remember to join Jesus on the Cross, to offer up little things and big things… It doesn’t have to be the 4 ft crucifix, though, so you could have other smaller crucifixes around the house for this purpose and just place the 4 ft one in a place where it fits nicely (larger empty wall), even if others won’t see it… If you go up and down the stairs a lot I think the stairwell would be a wonderful place, even if people who enter your home won’t see it… Now if you don’t have any other crucifixes anywhere and this crucifix is going to serve as a spiritual reminder… then yeah, I would try to find a visible spot for it, or place it where it fits nicely and just get other smaller ones for that purpose…

Wow!

You are lucky.

I don’t even have a four inch crucifix.

You must put it somewhere that enables you to pray in front of it and people can see it in their daily life.

4 ft is quite large for most houses, so I’d say to put it where it fits. We have one that is about 3’ that we hung above the fireplace in our last place. We don’t have a wall big enough for it to be on its own where we are currently, so right now it’s above our entertainment center in the living room.

We have a crucifix in every room of the house like another poster mentioned. Personally, I think it’s quite fitting that the big crucifix (the one meant for display) is in the room that we spend the most amount of time in. For us, that’s the living room.

Hang it anywhere that’s respectful and where you can feel graced by its presence. I thinking hanging on a large, tall wall by itself would powerful and dramatic statement about the faith in your family and your home.

(Just make sure you hang it on a joist or anchor it very well to the drywall! 🙂 You’d hate to have it come crashing down in the middle of the night.)

Boy that is LARGE. Were they out of the life-size ones?

😃

I think wherever it will fit is where it’s going to be. Ideally, it would be in a showcase place, maybe not in the entryway (kinda “in your face” for the non-Catholics). I could not hang such a large crucifix in my house, not only do I not have a place to put it but my husband would FREAK out (he’s a cradle Catholic turned atheist).

But you should enjoy it and put it where you will gaze upon Our Lord and Savior frequently (and not because you’re watching TV!).

Ok, I will say it more bluntly than others. It is likely too large. I can’t think of anywhere I would want a crucifix that big in our home, maybe someday we will have a mansion, but not now. Like other posters we have a crucifix in every room. I would either ask my mother to return it for a smaller one, or put it in my bedroom, a common place of prayer and not a place where it will be too much. Sorry, but it is too large for my tastes.

First thought that came into my mind: stairwell.

Before you even mentioned it yourself.

Well, yes, but I am also intrigued by the idea. We also have one in every room, all 12" or less, but something like that really makes a statement. I would be inclined to make it a focal point, especially if it is artistically done.

OP, what is this crucifix made of? What is the style of it? Is it a realistic one, or a metal one, or in some other style? Just curious.

The Vatican? 😃

Teasing! Seems like the stairwell is your best bet.

😉

I understand your point, all of ours are small also. But even when " making a statement" things should fit, be elegant, beautiful, and attractive. I could place a large type of religious art on every wall, in my front yard, have gregorian chants playing all the time throughout the house. This would be a statement, but it very well may turn more people off. Beauty is of utmost importance in these matters.

I agree, that is why I said artistically done. I am sure that we all have seen poorly molded, painted, and proportioned statues, pictures, etc. Quality pieces of any scale are hard to find and very expensive. And of course most houses could not tastefully accommodate something that large, but some could. Lifestyle generally trumps style in most homes. Does the OP want to find a place for it or would she be relieved to have something smaller or different?

Intrigued means just that. I did not proceed to check eBay for a 4 foot crucifix!
