I have a friend who I believe is suffering from depression. I have tried to help him but I am not a professional in these matters. I don’t know what to tell him to do? Are there catholic counselors I can refer him to?

This has been going on for some time but** part of the problem is that my friend is a professional himself and is worried that seeking help/counselling will show on his record negatively?** With that concern I honestly do not know what to tell him?

Can anyone help with a suggestion?

I am sorry that your friends is going through this right now. But he is lucky to have a friend like you.

I am not sure what to suggest…here we have an anonymous “help line” that you can call to find out about services offered in the area.

Maybe if he talked to someone anonymously they could tell him if he really has to worry about couselling showing on his record.

A word of advice to you:

you can’t make his decisions for him. Do your best to find options and solutions, but, if he refuses to follow through, don’t take it personally. There is only so much you can do…he will have to do the rest.

Good luck…I will say a prayer for you and your friend!

Going to a doctor and seeking help for depression does not wind up on any “record”, unless a person signs up for mental disability and quits work, and recieves support from the government, no one will know. reassure your friend of this…no one will find out unless he discloses it.

Annonimity is important…HIPPA ensures…no demands it.

Tell him to get plenty of sleep and exercise…speaking from experience here…it is the best thing he can do in the mean time…maybe you can go for vigorous walks while you talk together…endorphines kick in during exercise…and exercise helps if he is having trouble sleeping too.

And everything Feanaro’s wife said 😉
