Where were Moses and Elijah before the Transfiguration of Jesus?

If no one was in heaven until after the resurrection of Jesus, where did Moses and Elijah come from when they appeared with Jesus in the Transfiguration? How did Peter, James and John recognize Moses and Elijah since they never seen them before?
