as a catholic, i was raised to believe in angels and their importance in adding to the faith of those who practice christianity… now, i dont know… i wont say angels do or do not exist, i just want to understand their role in my faith… in learning about angels, they were pictured as spirits who would look out for those who were in danger or some other exigent situation… they would edge a child away from playing in the street or too close to a construction site… how does this concept work today, if at all? one could say angels work as the motivating initiative within those people whose safety for children is a primary concern (policemen, teachers, school crossing guards, etc.)… i dont know the answer-- im not really sure of the question, im thinking the historical view of angels doesn’t work today, at least not in what i’ve seen so far…

children are exposed to thousands of more threats than 40 years ago, and the threats are more serious… children alone at home; using the internet without supervision; drugs and alcohol on schoolgrounds; teachers/staff having sex with students, etc… where are the angels? many books have been written about how someone’s angel uplifted them in a time of crisis during an illness or depression… many have written about “near-death” experiences where they met someone who told them they would be returned to to their lives, but the reason for this return was not made clear…

so, my question is: where are the angels? thousands of children are abused, tortured and murdered every year in the u.s… thousands of children are forcibly posed for “kiddie porn” tapes… in asia, untold numbers of 12-year old children are sold into prostitution… along africa’s gold coast, children are commonly sold as slaves…

where are tha angels? if “angels” are a metaphor for the adults who are supposed to watch out for children, i would rather we use the phrase “adults looking out for children”… if we are to disabuse ourselves of the notion that angels are a force which actively involve themselves in our lives when and wherever people need help, then maybe it’s time to dispense with the term “angels”… we can face the issue realistically or we can continue with the “warm, fuzzy” feeling we get from reading and fantasizing about angels… i really dont care which… i just want to clear up my confusion about if and when i might expect to read about a dramatic increase of the children who are rescued from parental abuse, pedophilia, prostitution and enslavement…

are there fewer angels than in “olden times”? are there the same number of angels, but so many more people who need help? i remember reading about the seraphim and the cherubim… the only angels i recall by name are st. michael and lucifer… lucifer was down-sized in a mgmt. dispute; he changed his name to satan and opened his own franchise, which is doing quite well, i hear…

bottom line, what do people say who strongly believe in the existence of angels and the angels’ role in the 21st century? if i shouldn’t look for a dramatic event demonstrating the proof of angels after saving lives or preventing a tragedy, what should i look for angels to be doing? do angels work in daylight among regular people? do they work in isolated locations where witnesses are few, but the need for their intervention great? how does this system work? i think i remember that a person can “adopt” an angel as their guardian and pray to a particular angel for help… do angels respond mainly when prayed to? if more children prayed when being exploited for sexualk purposes, would that make a difference? what about parents who lock a child in a closet for 10 years… should they pray before expecting help? in some big cities in the u.s., people who call “911” for help hear only an aswering machine asking for their patience and to hold for the next “911” operator… would children have to wait for the next available angel before they can expect rescue? i hope not,

but, i could be wrong!

Angels are here. God created these are immortal, spirtual beings and I guess you could say that they are mentioned in the Nicene Creed (where it says that "We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.) Since angels’s are pure spirits, they would be the “unseen”. Oh, an angel’s function is to be God’s messengers.

thanks, i have that much figured out… what do they do for us nowadays? do they perform interventions when necessary? do they put “bugs” in our ears about dangers nearby? angels were portrayed historically as “guardian angels” (watching over a child who is about to fall into a pond, etc.)… are they still guarding today?

I know what my guardian angel has done for me. If you want to know what your guardian angel has done for you ask your angel with love and reverance. I have no idea where your guardian angel is. I only know that mine is with me.

They are doing their job. It is seamless for the most part. Nudging you to take an alternate route home from work or school. Nudging you to go to bed at a certain time to stay healthy.

Sometimes we are allowed to witness an act by an angel.

I was involved in an auto accident as I sat at a red light on the Feast of the Assumption ( I was headed to Church by the way and were going to be early for a change). My sons were with me and we were discussing an interesting article I had read just that day about Guardian Angels and their role at mass. Honest to goodness!

About 10 min after that conversation, while stopped at a red, a car sped straight for me through the red light. Certain to be a head on, all I could do was scream and wait for the impact at about 60 mph. My sons curled into a ball in the back waiting for impact.

At the moment of impact, the on coming car veered at the last min scratching our car. Car never moved - never felt a thing.

I feel completely certain it was our angels that headed off the car at the very moment of impact. We made it to mass as I told the officer to hurry it along. I cried all through mass.

Yes, angels are around serving to keep us safe until we are called to leave.

i support everyhting you say… my question is, as i said in my original post, are there angels for children who are exploited sexually and physically? children in kiddie porn, children in incestuous relationships, children sold as prostitutes in asia, children sold as slaves along the gold coast of africa… which angels look out for them? how are angels allocated? must you be reared in a certain faith (christianity) to qualify?

No one has the answers to those questions.

Perhaps you have been given the job to be an angel for one of these exploited children. Are you carrying out this responsibility?

It could be that your angel is prompting you to ask this question so that you can begin the work that you are called to do.

While I always hear alot about “the child that was abused, or the this that happened, or that” and where was God?

Why don’t I hear more about “my guardian angel” did this and protected me stories, like Jrabs below.

While I am certain that my guardian angel has had his hand on me a couple of times to protect me, I also have had events where I wonder if he was even there.

So, since angels are messangers of God, maybe we should pray and ask God?

Angels help us attain eternal life. While tragedy in this life is overwhelming for us, God’s ways are often mysterious and He may use tragedy in this life to draw us to His eternal banquet of joy. This life is infinitesimally brief compared to eternity. Look at Job. His life was filled with tragedy, but he was restored forever in the end.

Your angel is always there. It does not mean harm will never befall you.

Perhaps in the very situations that you wonder about, your angel helped avert a worse event.

Good post. Thanks

I have several instances, that Im very aware of, where I think my angel has intervened.
I wrote about them on my blog here is one

another
catholicinjapan.wordpress.com/2007/09/07/unusual-events-2/

There are other stories too that I have not written but feel I experienced divine intervention either by my angel really nudging me to do something or sending someone to help me. Here is another one.

While my Mom and brother were visiting me we went to the free observation floor, on the 45th floor or so, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building (basically city hall) and we had a nice time for the most part but here is where the intervention comes in. There is a cafe up there and after taking photos of the city view we were relaxing and eating ice cream and I suddenly felt this intense urge to leave, to hurry up and take the elevator down to the first floor. They were enjoying themselves and didnt see why we suddenly had to hurry but we got in the elevator and went to the main floor and started looking in the information & gift shop. Less then five minutes after we arrived on the first floor a massive earthquake struck Tokyo, stopping trains, elevators and such but no real damage. My mom was so scared even when I explained to her the building was designed to shake like that and we were in one of the safest places to be in in an earthquake it was of no comfort to her. The elevator to and from the observation floor had stopped as it is supposed to but it didnt start again for over one hour I heard. I firmly believe that my angel urged me to leave the observation floor before we got stuck up there for over one hour, or even worse stuck in the elevator as my mom was already frightened enough on the ground floor if she had been stuck up higher she would have been terrified.

The angels of these children protect them from satan and his demons as best they are able, however, it is Jesus who stands beside the children, weeping with them as the adults betray and abuse them.

Keep these children in your prayers and beg Jesus to grant their offenders the gift of true conversion so that they may have true contrition and sorrow for their actions.

Angels are bodiless spirits who do God’s work. They exist. So do the fallen angels. The dark angels lead us to sin, while the holy angels lead us to conversion from sin. Try praying the Chaplet of St. Michael. I have had many interventions by angels in my life. God has even allowed me to see angels both good and bad. They are continuously at work. Recognize the holy angels and thank God for them. Man chooses what he wants. When he chooses God’s way, the angels bring about goodness. When man chooses evil, the angels’ power to hold back the evil is lessened, because man has exercised his free will. Angels keep many things in our world in check. There are different levels of angels (choirs). Some angels are more powerful than others, yet each has a job assigned by the will of God. When young people are exploited it is because of the choice of someone to give into the sin of exploiting these children . We must pray for “those who are in most need of God’s mercy”. Yes, angels are quite real.
