Friends: Confusion:confused: Which Bible should I get a single man, non-believer, non-intellectual relative? Am looking for a men’s devotional CATHOLIC Bible. Don’t they make one? What about the Catholic Answer Bible? This might answer some questions for him on why I converted. Since I’m a new convert, don’t think I should get him an incomplete Prot. one. What do you all knowledgeable folks think? Want to get it for him soon.

THANKS ALOT.

P.S. I also think I should add this fellow is very anti-God, anti-Church, anti-religion.

Always go with a Catholic Bible since only then will you get all the books. 😃 Unfortunately there isn’t a Catholic study Bible just for men, but until there is, if you are wanting him to learn more about Catholicism, the Catholic Answer Bible would be a good choice. If you want a simple devotional Bible for him, you might consider the Catholic Serendipity Bible, published by Zondervan. It is the NAB without the scholarly (and sometimes distracting) footnotes, but it is packed with practical application, study helps, and even several topical Bible studies for particular groups.

If you go to my web page linked below, you can find out more info about it and other Bible study helps for Catholics.

Congratulations on your attempt to bring this man into the fold. Do you think he’ll actually read a bible you give him?
Don’t be crushed if he doesn’t. With any luck, it will sit on a shelf and “call” to him. However, don’t feel yourself a failure if he doesn’t respond. He has to come to God, God will wait.

I personally would not give someone like that a Bible. Give him some other Catholic literature that might help him. A lot of Peter Kreeft stuff is good. Look around, someone at your Catholic bookstore will be able to help you find something good.
If you insist on getting him a Bible though, just get a New Testament and not an entire Bible. Anything that’s fairly easy to understand, and not an NAB–the footnotes take up way too much space in their New Testaments.

Well, I informed him of a beautiful Bible verse recently via e-mail, that applies to him. I of course wrote it out so he could see it. Then I thought hummmm he probably doesn’t even have a Bible, which instigated my motivation, so thought I’d like to get him one.

He probably won’t read it, which is why I’m only getting him a paperback. But, perhaps one day, it just might beckon him to open it. Plant the seeds, then the harvest is up to God, right? I’m just a sower in God’s kingdom, as we all need to be!!

Thx for the awesome words nianka!!!

The current New American Bible for Catholics really is the world’s best translation. And tell him that the Catholic Bible includes 7 books not in the Protestant Bible – and these are fascinating.

Also, say a prayer for his conversion.

You’ve got to be kidding!! The New American Bible, besides lacking poetic dignity, uses “gender inclusive” language and modernist footnotes. I have never heard any orthodox Catholic say it is the best translation. The RSV-CE and Douay Rheims are among the finest, but NOT the NAB.

Props to Anima Christi. The NAB’s “scholarly footnotes” are often heretical. Totally go DRV.

I have the NAB-- I had to buy it for my high school religion class. Just so I can have some fun, what are some examples of the heretical footnotes? I’d like to look them up.

Hummmm–what are you guys talking about here?

Just must say, of all the Bibles I have had in my lifetime, my absolute favorite is my New American Bible (NAB) Saint Joseph Edition. I love it. Love the footnotes and the pictures, as it’s “illustrated”, which is what caught my eye to begin with, even before I converted. Well, guess, that’s why there are just so many Bible translations out there, for different folks. Hey what is that Bible that has about 6 different translations for everything? That sounds very awesome, I must say. For the real scholar who must compare.

For this person whom my thread is about, I must say, I decided on the “Catholic Answer Bible”. Basic, but with some questions people might have about the Catholic Faith in general. Pray for him, OK folks? He needs the Good News. Once again, all of us, we must plant the seeds of Christ, and the Gospel, pray, and leave the harvest to our Lord. I ask, what seeds can you plant today, those reading this?

God Bless~~

Ditto. The Douay-Rheims is the best translation, although that may not matter for the purposes of this thread, but this guy may as well get the best. I would definitely stay away from the NAB. In fact, I generally stay away from any bible that has the word “new” in it.

Hi There,
I am gonna throw my 2cents worth in…I think that for a nonbeliever or a new believer the NAB is probably the way to go. In fact the **NAB Catholic Gift & Study Bible from Nelson **is a good one to start out with. There is a common question section that is pretty easy to understand for a beginner.

Hope that helps…

Where does the NAB (as opposed to the LECTIONARY, a different book) use gender-neutral language?

The lack of poetic dignity arises from the literalness of the translation.

Isn’t this like asking which Koran to get a Catholic 🙂 ?

If he’s as you describe, what possible point can there be in getting him a book for which he may well have zero respect ? Would Catholics read “Mein Kampf”, Das Kapital", or the “Communist Manifesto”: or “Playboy”, if they couldn’t stand the sight of it, but were given a year’s subscription anyway ? This sounds like giving a Catholic “The Life and Times of Larry Flynt” (if it exists - which it probably will, if does not already) ##
