If a latin rite Catholic becomes Orthodox and then goes back to the Catholic church after some time, should they go back to the Latin church or go the Eastern Catholic church, seeing that they were Orthodox before?

Bare in mind I don’t know the “legal” answer to this question but I would say go celebrate the Mass in the community you are most comfortable with. I am sure you would be able to get the bishop to change your rite later if you truely feel that the community you are in is the right one for you.

The Church normally looks to your “birthright” (pun intended) with respect to your canonical rite. As you started out as a Latin Catholic, it’s probable that the Catholic Church would determine and affirm that is your canonical rite.

When Orthodox convert, they are normally ascribed to an Eastern Catholic church whose rite and traditions are closest to the Orthodox counterpart. If you were Ukrainian Orthodox, for example, it is most probable that you would be directed to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. That is not say one could not join another sui juris Church, but a canonical transfer might then be required.

All that said, I agree with DJK100 - you should first seek the Church in which you are most comfortable. You will likely be so counselled by any priest you may approach, as you have already ventured from Catholicism to Orthodoxy (and back). A true priest would not be at all critical, but would be genuinely interested in helping you find the faith experience you seek, so that your “journey home” concludes successfully and faithfully.

We pray for you! :gopray2:

If one is Catholic (Latin or Eastern), what says he/she may not attend the other Rite too? We are in Communion, thanks to God.

In this example you’ve stated, yes that person became Orthodox so he/she got used to the “eastern” style. However, that person was originally “western” style. The best thing for the person to do is attend Mass at the Rite he/she feels most comfortable with. The Rite that will give him/her a better and closer feeling to God.

It’s possible to switch rites with the permission of the Bishop. I’m sure a case such as this one would be a sufficient cause, but of course I’m not sure.

I don’t think anybody is asking if the hypothetical individual can attend liturgies of a different rite. I believe everybody here understands that any Catholic can attend any Catholic liturgy conducted by a priest in good standing with the Church, and that Catholics can apply for a canonical transfer if they so wish. Rather, it is a question of canon law: which rite does the individual automatically belong to upon re-conversion?

Is this theoretic, or is this you, if I may ask?
You don’t need to answer, just curious.

Canonically they belong to the Latin Rite. But they can go to any Church they please.

If you were chrismated Orthodox, and want to remain in that liturgical tradition, find a Greek Catholic parish. If you want to be Latin, find a Latin parish. It is quite simple once you decide where you want to belong.
