I had thought that silent prayer was better but, I read an article saying that praying aloud was better because you did not have the distractions you can have when trying to commune with Our Lord silently. Can anyone give me any imput on this? When I have read books about the saints lives, I thought they were praying silently. Meditating on the Scriptures and praying to God. What do you think?

In my opinion it’s best to pray silently. You can close your eyes and concentrate on the conversation you are having with our Lord. Of course, if you pray while driving (as I often do) please don’t close your eyes! I’ve found that I can have my most meaningful conversations with Him when I’m alone in the car. The important thing is to pray.

:yup:

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Just pray and don’t worry.

Prayer is a communication between each one of us in the most individual and personal way and God. Through practise we can discern how best to enter into communication with him. For each of us it is unique as we are all unique. Yet we all share so much. That we pray is more important than how we pray I would say.

whatever works for you, personally, I find reciting the psalms out loud for LOTH, in the measured pace we use in the monastery, has helped enormously in staying focused when I pray alone, and in staying in the sense of the words themselves. I do get out of breath easily when praying the rosary aloud and find as I get older I do need a water bottle to get through it, but it keeps me from going too fast, and lets my mind go on one track with the meditation, while my mouth recites the prayers. when walking I pray with my breathing, which I can’t quite explain, but when walking in general I need to remember to breathe properly, and the rosary helps me with that, and the breathing and walking help with the rosary meditation. I am sure that only makes sense to me, you should do what helps you the most.

Yes, whether it is silent or aloud, it does not really matter to God. Before we have even spoken a prayer, God already knows what we need to pray. So the silence or loudness of our prayer depends only on the condition of the heart of the one who is praying. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, he shouted aloud his prayers to the Father such that those around heard him. When He was praying in Gethsemane, was it silently or aloud?

if i was at mass…or some other event where there was a group of us then it is more practical to pray aloud…if i am praying on my own…i prefer to pray silently…firstly because i don’t want anyone other than god to hear and know my prayers…secondly if anyone heard me talking to myself they might think i am crazy…and thirdly because if you pray silently, then you can do it anywhere anytime…

ANGELIC PEACE
