Do you start up a religious conversation with your friends? At work/school? How do you evangelize and what do you think works best?

Well, since I work fro the church it’s different.
But in general, away from the office and the church…
I don’t start up anything,
I RESPOND.
In charity and truth, always with a smile and a peaceful countenance.

I think knowing both your faith and other faith traditions is the first key. That way you are prepared. The Karl Keating book Catholicism and Fundamentalism gives a good overview.

Second, learning to ask questions more so than speaking at people is a good technique. There is a book called “Questioning Evangelism” by Randy Newman which is helpful.

Third, don’t expect to see results, but have faith that God has planted this mission on your heart for his glory, not necessarily your satisfaction. Take heart that each interaction you have, however small, is planting, fertilizing or watering a seed for the kingdom. Here is a link to a story of a man who did the work without seeing the results: shamgardiscipleship.org/link-in-the-chain-story.html

Good luck in your endeavor.

I live in the south so it is common for protestants to hand out leaflets or come to the door. I listen and then ask them questions like 'why should I listen to you? Did someone teach you this? Did you come to this knowledge on your own? Why should I go to your church? That way I can share my Faith in a conversational tone. Some get angry when they find I am Catholic but sometimes you can see that they are thinking. It’s all about planting a seed.

I await the moments someone asks me about my Faith. My favorite was when I managed an elderly Section 8 apt complex and an elderly woman came into my office. Somehow news was out I was Catholic and she said " I always wanted to be a Catholic. My late husband was Catholic and I just never converted" We talked awhile and then I gave her a referral to a priest and she was received into the Church.

The other moment that stands out in my mind is one day when I asked for the key to our Church to pray during the day when it is locked and also was planning for a Catechism Class. I walked in and right behind me a woman walked in and said she always wanted to see inside a Catholic Church. LOL…well, there was she was in there with me alone before I could lock the door behind me. She asked me quite a few questions, quite a few about the Church itself which is beautiful. She seemed mesmerized with the beauty of the Church quite f rankly so I invited her to Mass and she said she didn’t think a person could just come to a Mass. I gave her the bulletin with Mass times, showed her the missalette
and how it worked and whether she went or not I do not know. I hope she did.

So I just await.

Mary.

By politely responding, and by asking leading questions that cause thought and reflection on the part of the ‘other’. Ideally I leave them with something they take away and quietly mull over with the Holy Spirit - perhaps at a later date, even.
